What is an undeclared major in Arts and Science

If I applied as undeclared major in Arts and Science what does that mean? What classes do I choose to take? I am applying as undeclared on my application, but plan to go Pre Med if I get accepted. Can I change from undeclared to Pre Med after getting accepted?

It means you don’t have any idea what you would like to major in at the time of your application (which is fine, because you cannot declare until at least the end of your freshman year anyway).

Anything you want from the school of Arts & Science. A lot of students will get some of their general education requirements (i.e. non-western culture, art, etc.) out of the way during this time so that they can focus on their major coursework in their later years.

Pre-Med is not a major, it is simply a plan. Anyone can be pre-med by taking the right classes- Calc 1&2, Chem 1&2 plus the labs, OChem 1&2 plus the labs, Bio 1&2, Physics 1&2. Most students who are thinking about medical school will also do extracurriculars in related fields- volunteering at the hospital or working in a related research lab at Pitt.

AwesomeOpposum - So I can be a Pre Med Undeclared Major?

Yes…but pre-med isn’t a type of degree or anything, it’s just a series of classes (like a track of them). You can be a pre-med anything. In fact, most people don’t even refer to themselves as “Pre-med X-major” or “Pre-Med Y Major”. They’re just “X Major” and “Y Major” with the intention of applying to medical school in the future.

AO, freshman D is starting with Undeclared, but one area of interest is Business. Is it really difficult to make a switch to the Business School later? She is a good student and will likely have a high GPA.

Sounds like it shouldn’t be too hard, especially if she is already at Main. She should still take the pre-business classes as well as 30 overall credits (15 per semester or 5 3-credit courses per semester) before transferring. And she should have at least a 2.75 GPA (both overall and in the pre-business classes). I’d recommend that she talk to an advisor in the business school after she gets to Pitt to make sure that she is doing all of the requirements her freshman year to ensure a successful transfer for the start of her sophomore year.
