What is college English like?

I am extremely certain I want to be a physician, and to get into Med school you can practically major in whatever you wan. I really like high school English classes because they are all so different. What is college English like? I know there are different classes like lit and writing but what is the work like. Do you read a book and write papers? I know this post is a mess but any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, in many English classes reading a book (or books) and writing papers is the essence of what you do - mostly the literature-focused classes. You also will learn literary analysis and how to consider theoretical questions/problems in literature and textual interpretation in general. You’ll also learn about historical trends in Anglophone literature - primary concentrations will be on British and American literature. Many departments, especially large ones, will have extra coursework or concentrations in other Anglophone literatures or sub-areas (like African American literature, or Native American literature, or Australian or Irish literature).

Some departments have a little more focus on language - so you may have to take some coursework in the English language and its structure and syntax.

Some departments have a concentration or a path you can take in writing, or are more writing-focused. So you’ll still take some literature courses (good writers are good readers) but you’ll also take a variety of courses on the craft of writing.
