What is Direct Deposit and TRIP?

Can anyone explain to me what Direct Deposit and TRIP are?
I've been using the My Application link for some time, and a friend recently mentioned something about the Current Students Tritonlink and I found a couple of vague links saying that I have to sign up for DD and TRIP. However, I haven't been informed by UCSD via email or mail saying that there are any new deadlines coming up for this. Any light to be shed on the matter would be appreciated.

And are these necessary to view my Official Financial Aid Status? I haven’t received an email from them about this either, even though I think I’ve met all the deadlines so far.

Direct Deposit is basically where you link up your checking/savings account to your financial aid package so that the school can just automatically put financial aid money in there. It is not necessary to view your Official Financial Aid Status.

Idk what TRIP is though…

Triton Registration Installment Plan (TRIP)

TRIP allows you to pay your quarterly registration fees in up to three monthly installments during the quarter.

* The Triton Registration Installment Plan “TRIP” allows you to pay registration fees in installments. TRIP DOES NOT defer any other student charges such as housing, books and parking.

 • To be eligible for the TRIP program you must be enrolled and have no payment holds on your student account.
 • There is a $30 non-refundable application fee for CA residents, $45 for non-residents, per quarter. The application fee must be paid with the first installment.
 • Whether or not you receive a billing statement, you must pay your installments by the posted due dates to avoid cancellation of your registration, cancellation of your deferment, a $50 late fee and a hold on your account.
 • If your deferment is cancelled, you will be responsible for the repayment of any outstanding registration fees.
 • If you are cancelled from classes, your deferment may be cancelled.
 • If you receive a hold from a past due payment, you must contact the Billing Services office after payment to have your hold released.
 • If you withdraw from the University, your deferment may be cancelled and you will be responsible for the repayment of any outstanding registration fees.
 • Installment Calculation: Combine all of your student Registration Fees including your college activity fee, along with your Health Insurance fee if applicable. Your first installment will equal 1/3 of this total plus the $30 or $45 application fee. The remaining 2/3 of your total registration fees will be billed in two equal installments during the quarter.
 • These payment calculations are subject to change based upon circumstances such as the TRIP enrollment date and Financial Aid awards.

So…is TRIP good to have then?

I think it would depend on your financial situation. One way or another you are paying, so do you want to pay one lump sum at the start of the quarter, or spread the payment out over three months?

From a financial standpoint, if you can pay it all up front, you save yourself $90 during the school year.

For direct deposit, is this typically linked to the student’s personal account? or a parent’s account?

I have a bank account separate from my parents but my mother recently set up an account with both our names on it (at her bank, I use a different bank) so that she could easily transfer money into it online (if I need to buy books, supplies, shoes, etc.). My DD is set up to my joint account, but my work study money will be deposited into my personal account. My parents and I decided that money I’ve been awarded should be saved in the joint account while money that I earn should be my own to spend and budget as I choose.

Many students use a bank account different from their parents so direct deposit is usually linked to their own personal accounts. Quite frankly, it’s more useful to have your own personal bank account, especially if you live far away from UCSD.

If we get financial aid, do you register in TRIP? I remember something about housing wanting quarterly payments, i’m not sure about anything else.

You can register in TRIP if you have financial aid but you do not have to. Housing wants quarterly payments because your financial aid comes quarterly. Since you pay for housing quarterly and you get financial aid quarterly, this guarantees that you have the money to pay for housing for that quarter.
