What is each Big Ten university known for?

Corbett, I do not think that UAA is any more academically dominant than the Big 10. The USNWR rankings are not accurate and strongly favor private universities and 11 Big 10 universities are public. Comparing 8 private universities (7 of which are smallish) to a conference made up primarily of large public universities is not possible of course, but I do not consider the UAA to be any more of an academic powerhouse than the Big 10.

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
Known for it’s huge study abroad center and connections worldwide.
According to the ARWU rankings of the world’s universities done by Shanghai Jiaotong University, it is ranked 28th in the world.
You can see for yourself on the ARWU website how these universities all rank up to each other and in different fields, just google ARWU :)

Support MSU’s isotope research
Sandra Pierce

Michigan’s future economic security will be determined by our willingness to invest in science and technology.

Today more than ever, it is nations and peoples who are willing to push forward with an entrepreneurial spirit to the frontiers of research, and then commercialize that research, that are prosperous.

Michigan has long been a leader in science and technology development. And now we have earned an opportunity to show that our state is still the right place to build massive tools for new discovery, with the selection of Michigan State University as the site for the more than half-billion-dollar Facility for Rare Isotope Beams.

FRIB is a game-changer for our state.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s decision in the waning days of President George Bush’s administration gave Michigan the chance to develop and build this facility to find and study new rare isotopes. These isotopes have uses in national security, medicine, materials science and more.

The selection was the result of decades of nuclear science excellence at MSU and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), which is on campus.

According to a study by the Anderson Economic Group, FRIB will bring more than $1 billion in economic activity to our state over the next 20 years. More than 850 researchers from around the globe have already joined the FRIB Users Organization, offering their input into its development. Many have already visited mid-Michigan to participate in planning sessions and begin planning research projects that won’t start until FRIB is completed in 2020.

NSCL and FRIB are attracting to Michigan leading minds in isotope research, who will be teaching eager students. The combination has made MSU the leading nuclear physics graduate program in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report, besting MIT in 2010. FRIB will be providing basic research, the kind that is rarely undertaken today by businesses — but which is vital for businesses to succeed. Basic research is, by its nature, risky, speculative, and often of greater benefit to society than to any one corporate sponsor. Without the discoveries made by basic research, business quickly runs out of new solutions and innovations for new products. Without innovation, economies wither. The nations that find tomorrow’s great idea will be the leaders in developing that idea, spreading wealth throughout their peoples. The nations that decline to invest in basic research get to rent its results, paying terms set by the leader.

But for FRIB’s benefits to provide Michigan and our nation with significant global competitive advantage, it is important for Congress to continue funding commitments that have been made. A balanced federal budget is important. But so is scientific research, for our nation’s economic future.

Michigan’s strong and engaged congressional delegation has members in important seats in the House and Senate. They worked together to ensure that MSU and Michigan had a fair opportunity to win FRIB, and they have helped secure initial federal funding. That must continue as the project moves through development and, starting in 2012, construction.

Photo: Rendering Of Spartan Stadium’s Planned New Scoreboard

by Sean Yuille • Jul 9, 2011 1:36 PM EDT

Earlier this summer we found out that Michigan State’s Breslin Center is getting a technology upgrade. The arena is not only switching to an HD scoreboard, but LED rings are also being added. These upgrades will make Breslin Center look more modern and improve the experience of watching a game there.

At the time, I said my hope was that Michigan State also had plans to install a new sound system and new scoreboard at Spartan Stadium. Technology-related improvements to the Spartans’ football home are long overdue, and it turns out the MSU athletic department is well aware. Plans are in place for a new sound system and a new HD scoreboard, and renderings already exist for the latter.

It appears the new scoreboard, which will be installed in 2012, is going to be located in the north end zone. The current scoreboard that has video is located in the south end zone, so MSU may end up having two video boards when all is said and done. I’m sure MSU would like two of what you see above, but my guess is they will leave the one in the south end zone alone or at the very least just switch out the old screen for an HD one.

For more renderings of the new Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center scoreboards, check out Anthony James Partners’ website. If you want a look at the frame for the Breslin Center scoreboard, check out the photo that Draymond Green tweeted earlier this week.

Corbett,

UAA is lame. That’s a Division III conference and who care about them? I went to one of them for my freshmen year and even most of the students don’t care. Many don’t even know what schools are in the conference. Many men on those teams swim slower than some women in Division I. UAA is all over the geographic map; the only thing that’s common is academics and it was by far the most important criteria in membership; it’s not like the Big 10 schools that share many things in common, not just academics research.

OSU aiming to break its own record of fastest land speed vehicle

From ANI
Washington, July 22: A team of engineering students at the Ohio State University’s (OSU) Center for Automotive Research (CAR) are in the process to build a battery-powered land speed vehicle capable of achieving a speed of 400 miles per hour.

They recently began running aerodynamics simulations at the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), one of the first steps in the long and careful process of designing, building and racing the fourth iteration of their record-breaking, alternative-fuel streamliner.fluctuations.

“The third generation electric land speed record vehicle to be designed and built by OSU students, the Buckeye Bullet 3, will be an entirely new car designed and built from the ground up,” noted Giorgio Rizzoni, Ph.D., professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of CAR.

“Driven by two custom-made electric motors designed and developed by Venturi, and powered by prismatic A123 batteries, the goal of the new vehicle will be to surpass all previous electric vehicle records,” he said.

In 2004, the team achieved distinction on the speedway at Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah, by setting the U.S. electric land speed record at just over 314 mph with the original Buckeye Bullet, a nickel-metal hydride battery-powered vehicle.

Several years later, the team returned with the Buckeye Bullet 2, a completely new vehicle powered by hydrogen fuel cells, and set the international land speed record for that class at nearly 303 mph.

The team then replaced the power source, once again, using the same frame and body with a new generation of lithium-ion batteries and set an international electric vehicle record in partnership with Venturi Automobiles and A123 Systems at just over 307 mph.

This spring, the Buckeye Bullet team, again in partnership with Venturi and A123 Systems, began the development process for a completely re-engineered vehicle designed to break the 400-mph mark.

The Buckeye Bullet team plans to complete the design process by the end of the summer.

That is a HUGE coup. Lockwood is one of the top names in ob gyn.

The NCAA has told Ohio State that it won’t face the most severe charges possible in the memorabilia-for-cash and tattoos scandal that cost football coach Jim Tressel his job.

Investigators said they found no evidence that Ohio State failed to properly monitor its football program or any evidence of a lack of institutional control, according to a letter sent to the university and released Friday.

NCAA investigators also said they have not found any new violations.

“Considering the institution’s rules education and monitoring efforts, the enforcement staff did not believe a failure to monitor charge was appropriate in this case,” the NCAA said in the letter sent Thursday.

The notice clearing Ohio State of the most serious of institutional breaches is a big break for the university, which will meet with the NCAA’s committee on infractions on Aug. 12. That committee could accept penalties Ohio State already placed on itself or could pile on recruiting restrictions, bowl bans and other, stiffer sanctions.

The NCAA letter first reported by The Columbus Dispatch said that Tressel was the only university official who knew about the violations involving his players. He didn’t report them to anyone else at the school.

Ohio State spokesman Jim Lynch said the NCAA’s findings were consistent with the university’s own investigation into what happened with the allegations surrounding Tressel and the players.

Tressel stepped down under pressure in May, months after the university discovered emails showing he’d been warned by an attorney in April 2010 about his players’ involvement with a Columbus tattoo parlor owner. The coach knew players received cash and tattoos for autographs, championship rings and equipment but did not tell anyone at Ohio State or the NCAA for about nine months. NCAA rules – and Tressel’s contract – specified that he had to disclose any and all information about possible violations.

The university announced earlier this month it would vacate the 2010 season, including its Allstate Sugar Bowl victory over Arkansas and its share of the Big Ten championship. It also self-imposed a two-year NCAA probation, in addition to suspending six players for the first five games and forcing Tressel out.

Ohio State also will overhaul its compliance office by the end of the year, creating a centralized office that will oversee athletics as well as other university departments, one of its trustees announced Friday. The move will strengthen oversight of all aspects of the university, said trustee Robert Schottenstein.

Shortly after Tressel ended his 10-year run at Ohio State, which included the 2002 national championship, star quarterback Terrelle Pryor – one of the suspended players – left the school, hoping to try his luck in an NFL supplemental draft.

Tressel met with Ohio State and NCAA officials on Feb. 8 to discuss the allegations. According to a transcript released Friday, he said that he made a mistake by keeping the information from his superiors.

He also said he knew that NCAA sanctions were “inevitable.”

“It was pretty simple. We were either gonna be horribly in trouble from a criminal standpoint, or we’re gonna be minorly involved in drug, you know, buying and stuff, or we’re gonna face the NCAA reality that we did some things with our memorabilia we’re not allowed to do,” he said. “I was totally confident one of those was gonna happen.”

The U.S. attorney’s office notified Ohio State officials last December that it discovered some Ohio State memorabilia during a raid. That led to the investigation into five players who were suspended, but allowed to participate in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4.

Tressel was asked if he would have never come forward if the government had not sent the letter. “Never is a long time. I don’t know,” he replied.

“I had confidence in the federal government that they were gonna do what they were supposed to do,” he said. “They didn’t need my help to do it, nor did they need my interruption to do it.”

The NCAA also said in its letter released Friday that it investigated a Sports Illustrated report that said nine more players sold memorabilia to the tattoo parlor owner, but confirmed that only one had any dealings with the man.
