What is easier medical school or dental school?
Both are going to have tons of classroom science first couple years coupled with varying amounts of clinical exposure depending on school, followed by two years of much less classroom and much more supervised clinical patient care. Easier (or harder) can be in eyes, efforts, and attitude of the beholder, also perhaps related to who are one’s clinical supervisors (eg attendings, DDS). Everyone’s experience whether as a dental or medical student will be unique. Impossible to make broad characterizations that one is easier than another.
On the other hand, upon graduation, passing of a licensing exam, a newly minted DDS can practice dentistry unsupervised. Upon graduation, a newly minted MD is looking at 3-5+ years of supervised training before they’ll practice on their own.
Actually after one year of residency, and passing the Step 3 exam, a physician can practice independently. Completing a residency is not a requirement for independent practice.
Yes , but the options are very few as getting hospital privileges or getting a group to hire you would be pretty low, if at all… Perhaps working at a skid row clinic getting paid in cash would be an option, maybe military.
Thats true. I know of several physicians who never completed residency, but still live a meaningful and full life. Once you go outside of the major metropolitan areas, you’d be surprised how many clinics and hospitals need physicians. They would be more than willing to take a non-board certified doc. Its much easier to just complete a residency and pass the boards.
But there are still options for those who don’t want to do a full residency.
I’d say the stress/pressure surrounding it is much greater for medical school but the actual material/time commitment is remarkably similar.
Hopefully you would choose a career based on what you enjoy and for which you have the aptitude. Which career choice is best for you?
Yes both are stressful and difficult. Lots of people don’t like to look at some one’s mouth all day, otoh, lots of people don’t like to see sick person all day either.
Shadow some of them first and make up your decision.
I’d say ‘easier’ is the wrong question. …
