What is Financial Engineering?

<p>Hey guys, I have heard about a new type of engineering which called financial engineering. Any ideas?</p>

<p>I’ve been thinking about doing this as well. Sounds like more of a graduate program than undergrad, though some schools actually offer it as undergrad. It’s fairly new though. Also called computation finance or quantitative analysis/finance. </p>

<p>It’s a combination of Software Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Finance to make investment, hedging, and trading decisions for IB or portfolio management based on risk analysis using computer software.</p>

<p>Wow, sounds pretty sophisticated. What would be the most effective degree that would lead to such major? I mean is it Accounting, Finance, Economics, Computer science, Computer engineer, Math, etc.</p>

<p>Something with lots of math and statistics, with some economics, finance, and computer science.</p>
