What is generally considered a typical Asian?

My school (in Vancouver, Canada) is mostly Asian and although our enriched classes are almost entirely Asian, there are a lot of Asians who don't do too well at school. It might be a little surprising to some people but it isn't considering what I'm used to, but a lot of Asians in my school are pretty average academically.

Well, being that Indians are part of the 60% majority of "Asians" around here - most of the stereotypical bits (and as a cynic, I'm inclined to saying I've never seen a bunch of 'smart' kids with decent numbers try so hard to get out of working - when it comes to the Far East Asian-American kids who were born in the United States mostly... I'm guilty also) are the same, just up the actual work ethic a couple of times (as well as parental pressure) and then... Yeah.

The thing is - stereotypes aren't really insulting to us, because even if certain things are expected of the "model minority", a great number of us were born and raised where most everybody else faced the same expectations... Or maybe we just have a sense of humor about things. We're more likely to laugh about jokes based on stereotypes than anyone else.

I myself am not asian but i have a few frnds who are and now that i think about it, all of them are the same exact photocopy of each other: math and science extraordinairs, violin for 7 years and piano for 10, very neat serious harrdddd working ,sometimes shy and great artists when it comes to drawing and caligraphy and stuff like that...they always care a greeaaatt deal more then anyone else about not only doing well but also geting those high numbers. well i donno THAT many azn ppl and i try not to generalize because i wouldnt want it to be done to me ( oh ur arab? so u must b a terrorist!!), but the above goes for the ten or so tht i have met...I realllyyy think its cultural, well obviosly.

Would art be considered stereotypical for an Asian? (such as painting, drawing, etc.)

Hey man Im into art as well(was(sic)). I took Comp Programming but now I hate it(gives me a headache plus I screwed up in it twice), I used to play tennis and swim and loads of stuff, I used to play GUITAR, my teacher was a BASSIST in a rock band, who went down to Surrey ever Sunday for a gig. I cant work hard, depend on whatever IQ i have left(fast receding due to stupidity around me),and best of all Im Indian!!!!! Yeah better believe it !

PS You know I always thought that the Indian edu system was the hardest in the world, but the Koreans really have it tough. Maybe Ill go to China and present the news in English, Ive heard it pays well.

Try imagine living in northern Vermont and your are the only Asian kid in your school (that's me...)
It is definitely a whole different experience. You feel somewhat special but most of all... when you are in a state where there's only whites, the racial discrimination part always come in...
Im not saying white kids are not nice, and as a matter of fact, I love white kids... but again, when you live in a state with 95% (or a little less or more) white, these racial themes always come in...

hello, I am a CHINESE student, yes, you would think i am a nerd, but i am actually a major slacker, the most non-typical asian high school student out there probably :).
I got bad grades, bad SAT scores, didn't get in to good colleges, parents don't care that much(which i think is pretty cool). and also did i mention:
I have never won any thing :O

Our school doesn't have enough asians for me to find a suitable stereotype. The only two I know were a girl who graduated last year, good but certainly not amazing at math, otherwise a spunky girl with an addictive personality. The other was, I believe, half-Japanese, and he's just one of the masses.

I wouldn't including Indians in the group of "typical asians." Indians are just hard workers, not nerds.

lol i'm asian but like...deep, deep down inside- I am white.

haha.
but i do believe that kungfu runs in my blood.

We have so many Asians that we have separate groups. Some are average people who have really integrated into Western culture, some are very immersed in Asian culture, so much that they speak English with little Chinese words thrown in (we call that "Chinglish", which sounds weird). Then of course you have the smart group...

Here's an interesting story from an Asian who is not the typical Asian:

I talked to an Asian classmate of mine and said (we were talking about SAT scores and whatnot, scores in general), "Well, you know, grades and scores AREN'T EVERYTHING. There's more to life. There's more out there."

Then, she replies with an unexpected, somewhat condescending reamark, "Yeah, that's what they all say."

I looked at her and wondered whether if its worth studying so hard (all she does is read and study, pretty much...an piano, i think), if that is all you are driven to do. I looked at her, for once, with pity, because she couldn't value other things besides scores on tests.

I know I'm not that smart as it is, but I still work hard and get decent grades. But, I never want to come to the point at which school is all I do and everything I do has to be for it. I know there's more to life.

What is this obsession over DDR(Dance Dance Revolution) that white people think Asians have? I was at a party and someone got DDR hooked up and everyone was telling me to go and bust a move and "show them how it's really done".

I'm horrible at DDR but I know a couple of people who play it and they have it in a lot of arcades and such. I wouldn't call it an obsession though.

Debate and spelling bee contest winners are typical of Asians or South Asians.

DDR is hard

woohooo DDR....its SOOOOO funnnnn

Debate [and spelling bee contest] winners are typical of Asians or South Asians.

I beg to differ. Once you get to college debate, there are less minorities in general: most of the winners tend to be white males. This is applicable to all types of debate: College Policy, College Parliamentary Debate (NPDA and APDA), and also Worlds.

Also, a lot of the great debaters that come from the hs policy circuit onto college parli are white...Homestead, anyone?

EDIT: P.S. I am asian. And I hate math and can almost stand science. My real passion is history and literature, and at current point...communication theory. :p But the math stereotype probably comes from asian immigrants whose education in asian countries in math far surpasses the US'.

Hmm, here's the azn stereotype, at least 'round here:

strong math/science, weak verbal

plays chess, violin, and piano

works constantly

no other ec's

spends all their time on xanga and at zoom getting pictures taken with their million OTHER cookiecutter azn friends

If not studying, eating pho or some rice cakes:P
