What is greek life like at Tufts? I have heard about anti-greek life protests, so I am wondering how students who are not involved in greek life feel about those who are and vice-versa. I am also wondering if there are any positive aspects of it.
An actual student will have more input, but as it’s summer you may not get any. My D is a rising junior at Tufts, rushed spring of freshman year, almost pledged, and decided against it. She never really had the goal of being Greek, was looking for a more extended social life. She remains happy with that decision, and friends who have joined seem happy with their decision too. Tufts has 4 sororities, 1 co-ed frat, and maybe 4 frats? So a very small percentage of students are Greek. Fraternities seem to comprise the bulk of party life for Tufts’ freshmen, regardless of affiliation, but the tradition was very much compromised when (I think) almost all of the frats were put on probation this past year. A rather scathing piece about frat initiation rites involving pretty graphic sexual descriptions was part of the reason for it, but as is the case most everywhere, I think concerns about the abuse of alcohol and other hazing also played a role. The probation has been lifted, I understand. She has remained good friends with girls who joined a sorority so feels she has the best of both worlds. I think for students who really want to be part of the Greek system it does fill the bill to an extent. I don’t get the impression they are looked down on at all. They are just another avenue for student activity.
