what is igetc? is it the same as ge?

Hey everyone again,

Quick question, I'm planning to transfer to UC Berkeley from De Anza College in Cupertino, CA. De Anza has a General Education (GE) and IGETC plan....I was told to complete all of my GE's and then some prereq's for my major (Network Programming). Today out of interest I researched IGETC and looks like UC's require it for transfer students? Do i have to take it?!?! because the IGETC courses are different from the GE courses!! I'm so mixed up!! I don't know if I'm doing the right plan, and I can't even visit a counselor for help because they don't work in the summer!!!

Thanks for the help!!!

The IGETC is a little different that the CSU plan. This is the IGETC for your school:http://www.deanza.edu/transfer/pdf/ge_igetc.pdf</a></p>

Follow that plan and you should be golden. Also, when you register for classes, make sure they’re UC transferable.

Look at number 2:http://www.deanza.edu/transfer/csu_main/trans_reqs_csu/ge_reqs_csu.html#igetc</a></p>

This is for the UC language requirement: http://www.deanza.edu/transfer/pdf/igetc_lote_certification.pdf</a></p>

Are you going into CS or engineering? Berkeley CS (in College of Letters & Science) requires IGETC but engineering will not accept IGETC, so it depends entirely on your major.

UCs don’t require it, but if you don’t complete it you will have to complete the breadth requirements for whatever UC you transfer to, which may be dramatically different than the GE classes you’ve taken.

The GE plan shouldn’t be that different…just make sure all of the classes are UC transferable. I would definitely follow IGETC instead of your random GE plan.

I’d simplify life and follow the IGETC from start to finish. Even if you know what the department at your target university wants, what if they don’t accept you? Another year of redundant general ed at community? With a good GPA, IGETC 100% finished and your major prereqs done you at least know you’ll get into somewhere good.

My take on departments with their own whacky GE requirements was always “your loss”.

Also, to the OP, by GE requirements do you mean the GE requirements for your associates degree?

If you plan on transfering to any Cal State or UC, I recommend you completely ignore those. The only college that will ever care about that is your community college. The community I transferred from required that I take several phys ed classes like yoga and bowling for GE when I could be taking major prep instead. No thanks.

IGETC and CSU GE (which is different from CC GE for your AA or AS) should be almost completely the same. The only major difference is that IGETC has a Foreign Language req and CSU GE has a Public Speaking req (in leiu of the FL). Otherwise you can follow either list as many classes overlap. I too go to DA and have been comparing the reqs for both systems for the past year and everytime I search through them, I have taken the same classes that are on both lists minus the major difference I listed above.

If you know your first options for transfer are UC, then it is best to follow IGETC from the start unless your intended major specifies you not to (for example, most Engineering programs). If you know you’d like to go to a CSU, then following the CSU GE is fine (and I think it’s a few units less overall), although CSU will also accept IGETC certifications.

Like disco is trying to get across, I think the most important thing you realize is that you should not be following the GE courses as stated at DA to obtain your AA or AS (unless of course you’d like to earn an AA or AS fro there) since a good majority of the classes they may require for your major are not UC transferrable and will count for nothing in the end when trying to transfer.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR HELPING OUT GUYS!!! THIS REALLY HELPED!!! Now I’m certain that I actually need to take the IGETC pattern, and not the GE!!! Thanks so much again!!

@turtlerock: OMG you go to De Anza too?! NICE!! Btw, you also mentioned how a majority of the classes are not UC transferable…How can I see if they are transferable or not? I looked through the class descriptions on the class schedule and it doesn’t say anything about UC transferability…confused

So when determining which UC or CSUs a particular student would like to apply to as a transfer, they primarily use the Assist site Assist.org (or google assist if they block the link).

Assist is updated every year (optionally) by each UC and CSU campus and lists every single UC transferrable class from the CCC (California Community College) you choose and even what categories of IGETC or CSUGE those classes fulfill (if any).

You can select an institution from the first drop-down box (in this case DA) and the very next screen will show a link to click on that shows all UC transferrable courses provided at DA and on the far side will show the IGETC req that class can fill. You can alternatively select that UC or CSU you’d like to transfer to in the drop-down box under “Agreements with Other Campuses” and you can view which major prerequisite courses are articulated with DA. This is important as having your lower-div major prerequisites completed at the time you apply to transfer can significantly increase your transfer admission success.

Best of luck.

OHHHHHH NOW I SEE!! Thank you so much for taking the time and helping me out!!
And Best of luck to you too :)
