Hi everyone! I'm considering transferring to UNC next year and I have read all of these posts saying that UNC is this vibrant and fun campus during the school year but I was just wondering what the surrounding area and city of Chapel Hill is like? Is it a dead town where everyone for the most part always stays on campus? Or is there a lot of fun, and easily accessible things to do in Chapel Hill? Is it safe to walk around off campus?

Thank you!!! :)

I’m really tired so I won’t go into too much detail here…but Chapel Hill is the quintessential college town. Chapel Hill was literally built around the needs of UNC. There are clubs and bars and restaurants all within walking distance (or at most, a short bus ride away) from campus…so yeah, there’s a lot to do!

anyone else have any information on this?

I am very curious about this as well. Bump.

I think Phonyreal said it all. Quintessential college town. Bars. Restaurants. Music venues. Very safe. Though for underclassmen (U21) there is a sizable Greek party scene which could be good or bad depending on how you see that. But I also went to apartments within a short distance of campus to hang out (Townhouse, Mill Creek etc.).

I would also visit the People’s Republic of Carrboro (like a mile from campus) if you like granola town, food-coop, organic kind of stuff…

I live in Chapel Hill, and there are definitely plenty of things to do all over the city. But you never really feel like you’re “off-campus”, because everything kind of revolves around the university. It’s very safe to walk around, and most hangout music/food areas are in close proximity to each other. The buses are also free, so you can pretty much get around anywhere. There are lots of small, secluded places to hang out. Plenty of restaurants and such like JohnBlack said. There are fun things to do, but everything is kind of on a small scale. There aren’t any HUGE hotspots. Mostly lots of small places. Something for everyone.

Just your average college town here. Everything is built around the university, which happens to be one fourth of the whole town. The other fourth is apartments and fun places for students. The rest are residential area( not too much interesting stuff here unless ur best bud is a native.)
Franklin is pretty cool and the crime rate here is nothing compared to wolfyville(Raleigh) and moordook(Durham).

thank you all for your insight! Just wanted to make sure there is plenty to do after classes and over the weekends if students want to get away from the dorms and campus for a bit (thats easily accessible).
