What is more important to the admissions people at Columbia?

What do you believe is more imporant to the admissions office, sat scores or the essay?

definitely the essay

Oh for sure the essay. Look at the ED results from last year and you'll really see that.

SAT scores, clearly. An 1100 SAT with an amazing essay isn't going to get in. A 1600 SAT with a lame essay has a reasonable shot. Of course, if you're within CU's range of acceptable SAT scores, then essay matters more.

Exactly. You do need to be in "the range" SAT-wise, but a "good" SAT (1400-ish) and a wonderful essay will give you a much better chance at admission than a wonderful SAT (1600-ish) and a "good" essay.

Oh I didn't look at it that way, but yeah if you're in range, the essay is a determining factor.

I have to go with the essay. Though a student with poor SAT scores is an unlikely admit even with a stellar essay, if a student's scores are fair, a great essay can be a huge factor, more so than a 2400.
