does writing essay matter much?

I got a 760 on the writing section of the new sat, but received a 9 on the essay. First off, is a 9 bad for CU, and secondly, how much does CU weigh the essay. I know a lot of schools aren't even regarding the writing section this year.

bizumpppppp

The only essay that really matters in this whole process is the essay you submitted to Columbia, not the one on the SAT. Although they might see the score, they won't be able to read it or judge it based on it's own merit.

Remember, the score of the essay on the SAT is only the composite of what two readers thought.

So, in essence, no, I don't think it matters. Especially if you have a 760 overall.

on the Princeton Review (and Sparknotes College's)'s websites, they list what colleges think are "Very Important", "Important", and "Considered"----the essay is listed under "Very Important"

i got a 770 and an essay 7 ( mc was 80), don't worry about it. your app essay is v important though.

in truth, while everyone is offering their opinions on what they think Columbia should be doing (ex. I got 7 on essay and so you shouldn't worry about it) nobody knows.

You should not worry, but this is what a few ivies (not specifically Columbia) have, as reported in the news, said: that 1)it could be used as a tiebreaker/borderline case: if, for example, your essay is very bad or very good. They do have a copy of your written essay in your file. 2) If you have a really amazing application essay but its quality is not reflected in your writing score (if, for instance, if you have a New Yorker-quality essay but your writing score is 620, they will suspect that it has been an, erm, conjoined effort.)

Now its your decision... are you going to waste another moment of your passing life worrying about a SAT writing score?

Will Columbia see the break down? I thought they only saw the final score? If anyone can clarify thanks

columbia will see the breakdown, i believe, as it is part of your final score.

but 760 is AMAZING. stop worrying and get a life ;)

The essay matters to the extent that it comprises 1/3 (or whatever) of your final score.

Incorrect. If they suspect that your writing sample was not written by you, they will check your writing scores in an act of verification of your work. If the samples don't match up, there will be some room for discrepancy.

Get real, dude. Do you really think Columbia is going to go through the process or ordering someone's 20 minute writing sample from ETS? They've got thousands of apps to get through. If there are issues of credibility, they'll just reject you. And how would they be able to tell that you didn't write your personal statement on the basis of some chicken scratch you slopped together in 20 minutes?

they will look at some writting samples from your SAT, but the adcom I met specificly said that they will look at some because they want to know how the writting essay is being graded, and if the grading is even consistant. I doubt they'll use a piece of writting you did 8 am on a saturday morning within 30 mins to discredit your personal statement.

Interesting, lynda. I assume they'll do this in the off-season when they have nothing else to do. The point does stand--that they won't use the writing sample against you.

Except, perhaps, if there are five or more spelling errors in the first two sentences.
