What is my ethnicity?

Hey guys i'm white however my father (also white) is from Morocco. Am I able to check off African American because technically I am or must i check off white. Additionally, i eat moroccan foods regularly had moroccan ceremonies and speak a little moroccan. I'm not trying to mooch off of a technicality however it would be very helpful if i could check off that box.

Then what are you trying to do exactly?

Try the Race FAQ thread.( post # 13) N. Africa doesn’t usually count as “African American” or “black”, but if you and your family think of yourselves as “African American”, maybe it will “work”.

What do you mean about your father being from Morocco? Does he consider himself African, or a recent White settler? If you culturally identify with the country of your father, who considers himself African, you may be “African American.” However, I don’t believe that you are what colleges are looking for in an “African American” applicant (though being thoroughly Moroccan could add to campus diversity, if this isn’t an admissions ploy). Ask an admissions officer.

From the Race FAQ #13

"Quote:
My family was born and raised in Morocco.
You are white by the federal definitions,

Black or African American persons, percent, 2000

as are various people of Middle Eastern origin.

“White. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa. It includes people who indicate their race as ‘White’ or report entries such as Irish, German, Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner, Arab, or Polish.”

You are white.

Billy, My father wouldn’t consider himself a recent white settler bc my family has at least 3 generations that lived in Morocco.
Im not sure i would consider myself african american but i definitely consider myself moroccan and since there is no box for N. African African American is the closest i can get.

Actually, in one of the above posts, it is mentioned that North Africans are included with “White” (I knew Middle Easterners were, at least), so you may want to check that. However, on the online application, when you click “White”, I believe you are given the option between “European”, “Middle Eastern”, or “Other” (unless I’m confusing the Common App with another online app).

no billy, you are right. it does give various options
