A question for anyone who can answer: I really love music, so the eastman school’s regular performances and just being so close to such a prestigious music school is a huge draw for me. The thing is I play piano and would love to continue to be able to practice. Does Rochester have any facility available to just the student body in general or is all of the music schtuff exclusive to eastman? When I say that I mean is there a private place to practice?

As to music, the music department has an FAQ:

“Practice rooms on the River Campus are located in the basement of the Spurrier building. The building is generally open between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. Additional practice rooms with grand pianos are available in Strong Auditorium for music majors or those taking primary piano lessons with faculty at the Eastman School of Music. The rooms are kept locked; students may borrow keys from the Music Department with a $10 deposit.”

Spurrier is a gym. I believe the hours refer to when the building opens its doors, not for how long.

As to the midwestern feel, there is a line, somewhere west of Albany and probably near Syracuse that divides the east from the midwest. You switch from east coast mentality to midwestern openness and that different sort of friendliness. You also switch from soda to pop, though that word choice goes both ways upstate.

There’s also the Music Interest Floor special housing, and they have a practice room available. If you love music, you might want to apply to them, they’re great people.

Thanks so much you guys. Writercat, ill definitely look into that

dittodog1yr… I have definitely heard similar sentiments expressed about Rochester. The description I often hear is that we have the offerings of a big city but a small-town midwestern disposition. Now, to those coming from New York City or Los Angeles, it may not appear that we have the offerings of a big city, but having moved here myself from a city of a similar size, I can tell you Rochester as a lot more going on.

Lergnom… Soda! Pop is for people in Buffalo.
