Social Scene?

Can anyone give me an idea of what the social scene is like at Rochester? What do people do on weekends? Thanks!

Look back a page or two to find even more threads devoted to this topic!

I am currently visiting rochester. I liked the school but whats making me double think me going there is the fact that it seems so boring. The campus seems like a ghost town with hardly any students doing any sort of activity. Why is this? and the city has nothing to do

Students had their last classes on Wednesday. Today is a “reading day” Spring semester final exams are next week. Students are busy finishing papers, studying for finals, and packing to leave for the summer.

you must be visiting Rochester minnesota  The Rochester in NYS has TONS to do.

The Uof R’s Eastman Theater for music, GEVA, RBTL and many other theaters, tons of clubs for music and dancing, the UofR has the Memorial Art Gallery, we have the Museum of PLAY. If you’re not into being artsy, but rather outdoorsy…we are on a GREAT lake, the campus is on a river, we have the highest ski area between the adirondacks and the Rockies. Pro football in Buffalo, basketball at Syracuse, Toronto just across the lake.
And if you want to drink - Wine tours of the Finger Lakes really can’t be beat (since I wouldn’t drink the beer made from the sparkling waters of our dear Genessee river)

just a few thoughts.
Though I agree, campus was very quiet for the start of reading week.

^^^ You didn’t mention High Falls. I’ve had many a Genny and Honey Brown, so skier send 'em my way…

I love Rochester… My wife and I are about to purchase season tickets to the auditorium theatre where we just saw a professional production of ‘Wicked’ last weekend (which was a great show). The public market is an awesome place to spend a Saturday morning. Geva theater is the mostly highly attended theater in upstate NY. About a month ago I went to the Memorial Art Gallery and saw Monet’s and Rembrandt’s and an incredibly amount of local art. There are lots of cultural and ethnic restaraunts throughout the city…

Rochester is going through a bit of a renaissance right now and is quickly becoming the cultural and artistic hub of upstate NY. Not only is there a lot to do, but everything is affordable and accessible (i.e. we left our house, drove across the city, and were seated in the theater for ‘Wicked’ in half an hour).

Also, there are 230+ student clubs and organizations. The student body is anything but inactive and boring, and my guess is that your impression was affected by upcoming finals, as someone else already mentioned.

I hope that this helps!

As a side note, I get crime alerts for Rochester. I wish the police there reported to crimereports.com, but the information is available through spotcrime.com - which seems to be the thing in NY state. (I prefer crimereports’ mapping system.)

The crime in Rochester, particularly the violent crime, is way away from campus, almost completely on the northwest side past downtown, so literally on the others side of the city. I’ve been in that area. It sucks. Nowhere near school.

We visited the campus on April 18th and 19th and it was anything but boring. In the dorm quad area there was a student rock group playing outside with students sitting on the lawn listening, eating . THere were lots of kids everywhere. THere was a baseball game going on. THere was talk of a dandelion festival on campus that was coming up.
Everyone we met was helpful and friendly- very down to earth.

About the student organizations: I know that almost every college says, “If we don’t have the club you want, you can start one.” We took it with a grain of salt. But I know that at Rochester, it is possible - I know of at least 2 new organizations in the past two years.

Chedva… That is definitely true. Every year new clubs are added by groups of students with quirky interests.

Absolutely true!

UR now has an official Quidditch team!

(Which D helped organize and get it recognized by SA last fall.)

Now that l know there is a Quidditch team, I am even more excited to be going to U of R in August!!
