Top:
6th: Pre-Algebra or Math CC-B (New common core class, introduced after I was in middle school)
7th: Algebra
8th: Geometry
9th: Advanced Algebra II Honors (Essentially Algebra II but with modified topics)
10th: Advanced Precalculus Honors (Precalculus but with modified topics)
11th: AP BC Calculus
12th: AP Statistics (My school doesn’t offer multivariable calculus)
@Brandonh98 Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra 1, Abstract Algebra 2, and Topology not only in High School but within a single year?! What the triangle?! You have to be kidding. Or at least you must be buying these textbooks and skimming through them because there is no way a High Schooler could receive credit for “taking” those classes. If your school actually does allow that, then please give me an application to apply to your High School.
reg path:
9- Algebra 1
10- Geometry (H)
11- Algebra 2 (H)
12- Precalculus (H)
to complete the following paths you have to begin in grade 7 w/ algebra, or grade 8 with geo or geo over summer
path 1:
9- Geometry (Honors)
10- Algebra 2 Honors
11- Precalculus Honors
12- AP Calculus BC
path 2 (equivalent to path 1 / 12th grade course)
9- Algebra 2
10- Precalculus
11- AP Calculus AB
12- AP Calculus BC
path 3 (super accelerated, few ppl in it)
9- Algebra 2 Honors
10- Precalculus Honors
11- AP Calculus BC
12- AP Statistics
a lot of ppl who take path 3 drop it from 9-10th grade because Precalculus Honors is the most difficult course at our school. algebra 2 honors is the second hardest (in terms of rigor), followed by AP Calculus BC
Big range
9th-Alg 1-AP Calc AB/BC
10th-Geo-Diff Eq
11th-Algebra 2- College math
12th- Pre-Calc-College Math
Ours is:
7th - Algebra I/Geometry
8th - Algebra II/Geometry
9th - Precalc + Trig
10th - AP Calc AB
11th - AP Calc BC
12th - AP Stats (any time between 10th through 12th + it’s optional)
I’m doing it a bit differently:
6th - Algebra 1
7th - Precalc xD I don’t know how that happened
8th - AP Calc BC (year) + Uni Number Theory (spring)
9th - Multivar Differential (fall) + Multivar Integral (spring)
10th - Linear Alg (fall) + Differential Equations (spring)
11th - Real Analysis (directed study)
12th - Complex Analysis (directed study)
I actually hate stats so much and don’t want to take it
MK I know this is really late lol but I want to do this too
8th Grade - Pre-Algebra | Algebra I Math 8
9th Grade - Pre-Algebra | Algebra I / Geometry, and Geometry Acc.
10th Grade - Geometry / Algebra II / Algebra II Acc.
11th Grade - Algebra II / Pre-Calc / Pre-Calc Honors
12th Grade - Pre-Cal / AP Calculus / AP Statistics
S21 is taking Calc BC this year in 9th but this is unusual for our public high school, most are taking Math 1 or 2. Our state has a residential boarding school for 11th/12th we hope he gets into as they have many advanced math courses such that no one runs out.
For 10th grade we are evaluating options but most likely the math he studies will be aided by a tutor and he will not receive credit. If he is not accepted into the residential boarding school for 11th/12th we will have a problem, but his chances are quite good.
@yearstogo Can he dual enroll at a local CC or university? If not, you might look into https://ohs.stanford.edu/academics/courses?division=40 They do offer FA aid for those below a certain income.
If he likes to self-study: https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mathematics/ Also Google opencourseware and you’ll find numerous other sources for free self-study.
He has participated in a local math circle for several years that is sponsored by a well-known university. We have spoken to one of the professors about the possibility of auditing Calc III next year. I am not sure what the costs might be as this is a very expensive private liberal arts college.
Logistics might be the biggest issue though as he wants to play soccer/tennis for his high school and I am not sure if we would have adequate time to get him back and forth. We are going to look into a bit further though as it could be a great opportunity for him whether he gets credit or not. If auditing the course doesn’t work, he will probably use the MIT open courseware.
Thanks
Our school is an IB school. The highest standard sequence is:
8th: Algebra 1
9th: Geometry Honors
10th: Algebra 2/Trig Honors
11th: IB Mathematics I SL
12th: IB Mathematics II SL. OR IB Calculus
Freshman: Integrated Math 2 Enhanced
Sophomore: Accelerated Precalculus
Junior: AP Calculus AB/AP Statistics
Senior: AP Calculus BC/AP Statistics
Is it hard to do precalc in the summer?
There’s really a wide range, but I’ll give the official 3. (A lot of people test out or switch to honors track.)
On-Level Track:
Math 6
Math 7
Math 8 (Pre-Algebra)
Algebra 1
Geometry
Algebra 2
Pre-Calculus
Honors Track:
Math Honors 6
Math Honors 7 (Pre-Algebra)
Algebra 1 Honors
Geometry Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Pre-Calculus Honors
AP Calculus AB or BC
Higher Track:
Pre-Algebra Honors
Algebra 1 Honors
Geometry Honors
Algebra 2 Honors
Pre-Calculus Honors
AP Calculus BC
Multi-variable Calculus
People take AP Stats. at different times, pre-cal is the prereq. for it.
