I recently got the e-mail from Stanford with the link to the campus bike shop. The prices of the bicycles are $249 and up. However, the website doesn't list the prices of the used bikes. Does anyone have a rough idea of the cost of a used bike? Will it be better to simply purchase a new one? Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Check the Bay Area Craigslist.

You’ll be hitting the peak of bike buying if you try to get when just when you get to campus…so…there won’t be quite as many used bikes. You can also to to Target or Walmart and get an inexpensive bike…under $100…but you might need to get a new one every year!

^I was going to say the same exact thing! In fact, I checked the bay area craigslist already, and I think I can get a decent used 10 speed for 100 dollars or so.

On a similar note, I had a bike from Walmart once, and it was terrible (rusted easily, had gross stickers, and was soooo heavy).
