What is the best laptop for a computer science major?

The title says it all really. I’m currently entering my second year at college and am curious as to what the best choice would be for me. Having done some research, I have found that a Mac doesn’t quite suit the major; therefore, I am more than willing to purchase a Windows.

In terms of requirements, it would most definitely need a long battery life with a high amount of memory. My priorities lie in power and productivity, but I also enjoy watching the occasional movie or playing a small game here or there (if that makes any difference). I have pretty much no experience with Windows, so I’m open to any suggestions you lot have. $1,000 is more or less my price limit when it comes to the laptop as well.

Thanks in advance!

If you’re doing a lot of programming, you will learn to hate Windows. Why do you say that a Mac doesn’t suit the major? Most of my CS professors used Macs.

My suggestion is either to get a Mac or get a PC (Windows) with the intent to dual boot Linux to learn and switch at some point. You will not want to do higher-level CS work in Windows. If you’re looking at PCs, I’d recommend looking at Lenovo Thinkpads; they’re some of the best in the PC game and work well with Linux if you choose to go that route. Specifically, I’d look at the T series, L series if you need a cheaper option (but not as durable), or X series if you want to spend more and go the ultrabook route.
