What is the best way for me to improve these scores?

I'm a sophomore and I got these scores on my PSATs, with barely any prep ( I did three barrons tests and did not check my answers after I did them):

CR--68
Math---64
Writing--65

Total: 197

I'm going to be serious about studying for them this summer since I will be a junior. What are some good books for me to attempt this with?

I need to get about a 215 to become a National Merit Semifinalist in my state, if that helps. Is that even possible? (assuming I study of course). Thanks.

definitely possible

i jumped from PSAT score of 191 to 222 from sophomore to junior year.

practice questions from CB, princeton, kaplan, barrons will all help tremendously. for CR, you seriously need to read more. doing questions only help so much, reading quality magazines like TIME is so much better.

i got 219 this year as a sophomore. i think you should boost up math since it is the easiest part (for reading, you have to know vocab words). math is a lot of logic. you could easily get 75 with studying. writing is the second easiest, you could get 75 with some studying as well. just know ur idioms. reading..idk...read a lot. try to get 70 and above. that way, you'll end up with a 220.

what are some good math prep books for a person who knows the basics, but cannot answer the more advanced topics:
I got a 5 out of 5 on the easy questions (or whatever it was out of)
an 18 out of 18 on the medium questions
and a 3!! out of 18 on the hard questions.
So, I only missed hard questions on the math section. Any ideas?

study, study, study! it will significantly improve your scores, despite what some may say...do practice problems for math, lots of reading (for pleasure hopefully!), and do some writing in your spare time -- you'll notice a huge difference when the sats come around again next time

But do it ahead of test time. I did intense study right before the test and it actually backfired. I actually ended up with a score less than my sophomore score & out of range of semimerit. Bummer.

thanks everyone :)

See what subjects you missed the most on (geometry, algebra, number, prob). Then focus on it. Put lots of stuff on your calculator, like functions and equations and formulas).

For math try Rocket Review - it gets high marks for the math review.
