Sophomores taking the PSAT

I'm a sophomore and I just got my scores back today...
Critical Reading 57
Math 80
Writing 70
Overall 207

Did other sophomores take it? And if so, how'd you do?

ps. Can anyone tell me how I can raise my critical reading score? My reading is just terrible. I don't know if reading novels or anything will help...

i'm a junior and i raised my score by 18 points this year. i didn't do a whole lot of studying besides taking 2 practice tests the couple days before the tests and looking over some vocabulary. i recently bought the princeton's review SAT book which gives a lot of good tips that should help you with the critical reading.

if you aren;t familiar with the way the test is written you could raise your cr score by alot if you take practice tests then review every question you missed, and know why you missed it.

That is still a very good score for a sophomore. But you should know what part you are struggling in on CR. If it is the vocab part, you should perhaps take time and learn words/roots. If your passage reading is low, try reading some books.

-i didn't get my scores yet :[

My score went up 300 points since my sophomore SAT with minimal prep... so don't panic.

I think the best course of action now is just to read challenging material. When it gets closer to the actual test, you can start working through the blue book. For me, just recognizing the patterns within the questions and familarizing myself with the time limits helped the most.

What is considered a good score for sophomores taking the PSAT?

One of the best suggestions I've seen to help with critical reading skills is to read the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. Also, expect your scores to increase with another year of school.

my brother is a high school sophomore and he got his scores from his school yesterday; 65-67-66 for a 198 index, for sophomores this equated to percentiles of 97-98-99; my parents were shocked!!(he has been a lackluster student). Now, they are viewing him in a new light, and the pressure is now on to perform better in school etc..

As a sophomore, I got a 203 with absolutely no prep beforehand. This year, I got a 221 with minimal prep: just the included PSAT practice test, on which I got a 217. I believe that having another year of high school made the biggest amount of difference for me, because it's amazing how much harder classes (at least in my school) become in 10th grade and up. I'd imagine that you definetely could jump to semifinalist-level in your junior year with little prep.

i'm a sophomore who took the saturday test...my scores were:
critical reading: 72
math: 80
writing: 77
total: 229

i would suggest reading articles from high-end magazines (new yorker, the economist, smithsonian, maybe new york times magazine) to boost your cr score.
