what is the deadline for submitting FAFSA?

...for new freshman student, 2008-09. I asked this question of a FAFSA phone rep, and she said it was Sept something 2009.

I heard from somewhere it was 3-1-08. does it vary by state, by individual college?

The 2008-2009 FAFSA can be filed until June 30 2009. This is because summer classes in 2009 are considered part of the 2008-2009 school year for financial aid purposes.

However each school and each State (for instance Oklahoma is April for their grant aid) has their own recommended deadlines. For the best chance at their institutional aid, State aid and limited federal aid (eg SEOG and Perkins where the school is given limited amounts of funds as opposed to Pell where if you qualify you get the amount you qualify for) check out the school deadlines and meet them.

So yes it varies by school and by state. Go for the earliest deadline.

I just completed my daughter's today.
It seems like most of the schools in Mass have Feb 1st or 15th deadlines for incoming freshman. So hard to get them done so early.
I had a little trouble with my PIN and called them ( very helpful,I might add )
They told me it takes 3-5 business days to get them to the schools.
Tomorrow,I will attempt the CSS Profile..not looking forward to that

Is state aid calculated through the FAFSA and any other college form that is special to the college, or is there another form, say, FASSA, free application for State student aid?

The deadlines, then, are specified by the college? But the college is sensitive to any deadline imposed by the state?

FAFSA has nothing to do with state aid. If there is state aid, you should check your state's website - either their Department of Education or their Education Financing Authority.

The deadlines are, without exception, specified by the colleges. Check their FA websites. They are not sensitive to any "deadline" imposed by the state for any aid that is not administered by the college.

The State grant in our state (Oklahoma) is based on the FAFSA EFC. For Oklahoma you have to file FAFSA by April 15 for best consideration. Check with your State education department for their deadlines and whether or not there is a seperate application. We filed a lot earlier than that for the reasons listed above.
