what is the difference between AA, AS, AA-T, and AS-T (community college)

im about to choose a major in community college however i do plan on transferring to a 4-year university later on. does that mean i’m only allowed to pick an AA-T or AS-T or else i wont be able to transfer?

i want an engineering major however the community college im in indicates that it’s just AS and not AS-T. all the other AS-T programs/majors are quite far away from engineering (business, childhood education, administrative justice, etc.) but there is one in mathematics.

also, how does it affect financial aid? i applied for financial aid however i first need to declare a major. given that i plan on transferring, will i have to pick an AS-T program?

If you are in California, here is the description for AA-T/AS-T. Basically, it is an associates degree whose curricular requirements are specified to facilitate transfer to a four year school. You can, of course, transfer to a four year school without an AA-T/AS-T, though you may have to be more careful about selecting courses for transfer preparation for your desired major (see http://www.assist.org if you are in California).
