There is a lot of debate on this. I personally feel like the accounting courses prepare you very well and offer something that say, a classics degree wouldn’t. I have read a lot (including this article: http://tapwage.com/cheatsheets/2015/05/20/the-ideal-major-for-investment-banking-and-other-career-questions ) that says one should just pick the major you enjoy and get good grades. What are your thoughts?
There is no perfect major and not a ton of people actually get jobs in investment banking. Being at a top school helps. I agree that you should pick a major you enjoy, do as well as you can, and then see where it takes you.
You pretty much answered your own question if you are going to refer to that article. Finance, econ, and math are the ideal majors for a career in IB. Accounting won’t help you as a major really because the curriculum and advanced electives are drastically different. If you are at an undergraduate university that doesn’t have a business school or finance major then your junior year internship will be extremely important since that it where you will pick up a lot of your financial modeling skills.
