I don't know if this is a hook or not. I broke my hip and eighth grade and have spent most of high school in a wheelchair. I have had four surgeries and probably missed a total of four or five months of school and still have managed to get straight As in honors and AP classes. I have also pretty much devoted my life since then to getting to MIT (the only vacation I have been able to go on in four years I went to MIT). I hope it means as much to MIT as it does to me.

I guess your passion is MIT :)

Again! With the thinking too much.

You're all honestly kind of scary. Who builds nuclear fusion reactors in their basement? I mean, that's seriously awesome for you but also

TOTALLY INSANE.

Normal people go here too, so relax. (<<<That's the point I'm going for here.)

I'm pretty sure my hook was that I was clueless. =)

hmm...I had an eating disorder compounded by a few mood disorders for most of my high school years, including hospitalization for most of my junior year. Still made it through with a 4.0 and 5s on all 9 of my APs though (shooting for 15 by the end of this year). Not that I would ever let a college find out I was mentally unstable...that wouldn't bode well wince.
The definite worst part about not being able to fully function at school (and at life, really) in the college prep sense is that you can't do any ECs or take leadership positions or do comm service. That effectively kills any chances at Ivy-caliber colleges, no matter how strong your scores are, or the dedication and perseverance it took to overcome even the not-so-exalted challenges - because the paper will only reflect mediocrity, without the pretty awards and publications and olympiads that everyone seeks as the measure of potential success.
But enough of gloominess and good luck to everyone! Passion and character will count more in the long run than four years at any college, however prestigious, will: and for those of us, myself included, who don't have stellar national awards, and for those deferred/rejected... well, we're just saving ourselves for Nobels later.

This is a pretty unique hook:

hahaha, nice hook indeed.
Sigh, after looking at all these awesome hooks and individuals... I think about myself, my lack of specialty, and wonder why I was admitted. I hope all of you guys who are so devoted to MIT get in.

LauraN:
So, do abnormal people also go to MIT too :)?

My hook: I'm an international pop sensation. My music is a blend of celtic, gangsta rap, and opera.

Last summer, I opened for Enya, 50 Cent, and Renee Flemming.

Check out my new CD coming out on 1/1/2006 "Love It, Or Leave It"

Chuck Norris likes to knit sweaters in his free time. And by "knit", I mean "kick", and by "sweaters", I mean "babies".

Whenever Chuck Norris hears the "Numa-numa" song, he roundhouse-kicks the closest fat kid.

zking: believe me when I say we get all types. =)

lol!!! brian your in! lol that is funny. i(heart)nerds, did your make that yourself?

im still wondering how much these hooks will help us. im pretty sure brian is in, but what about the rest of us? i mean i know my marathon is going to help, but how much? can it help excuse below average grades, sats, rank etc?

I'm me, and no one else is. What better "hook" is there?! :D

Hey zking.
Are you really working on a hydrogen engine?
I actually want to go to MIT to build the one that I've planned.
Keyword: planned.
PS: email me! its good to have some one to talk to that understands cars.
Parents hate the thought of having an engineer for a son and have so far replaced all my tools with med books.
Do you think that MIT will accept a guy who has high test scores ( 760M 690 CR 760W) but low GPA(2.4ish).
I kind of shattered my arm twice in a row and I didn't go to school for about one and a half years.

No, I am not in. I got deferred like everybody else. I have no idea who is making all those silly posts.

brian is a nerrd lol.

"but low GPA(2.4ish)."

blink

Actually I was guessing cause I'm from singapore and I don't really know how GPA works.
Its the other way here lower better.
Its (calculated properly) 3.4 which is around B3 or B4

Thats about average.

And I'm only applying next year.

Yay! A year to raise my GPA!

hm, i didn't know singapore did GPA like that. so are you an American living in Singapore? (since ur CC name is Caucasian). If everything else about your app is strong, make sure your app and recommenders explain the low gpa by noting the trouble you've overcome recovering from injuries and missing school. and you still have a year to bring it up some, so it's all good ^_^
