Due to the lack of load/performance/stress testing.

Since no other college/university uses this mechanism and MIT also have not forced everyone to use this in the past. This is the first time MIT is not going to send out any notification wrt admissions except the Tubes.

What is the probability that MIT decision goes down at 9 p.m. (ET) if?
1. 10% login at the same time i.e. ~500
2. 20% login at the same time i.e. ~1000
3. 30% login at the same time i.e. ~1500

I know I had dialup when I checked last year at noon, and it came up fine. Of course, the extra ten seconds caused by my insanely slow connection were agonizing, but I survived… barely. Yeah, so, if you have dialup, stake out at a library computer or internet cafe or something. And I’ve never heard of the server crashing before :)

Servers have crashed during the application before, but I’ve never seen problems with the decision-checking site. Although applicants were able to wait for the mail last year, I think most checked their decisions on the site.

I would say it’s about 50/50. Sure it is MIT, but then again, they seem to have a reputation for having servers that crash at the last moment. For example, I believe they have had servers go down for the app for the last three years. And when they were trying to announce the InvenTeams, they were down.

I think decisions actually came out early last year, not to get anyone’s hopes up horribly or anything. I really doubt that the servers will crash.
