Hi everyone, I am wondering what providing your class rank on an application does. I am in the top quarter of my class, and I go to what I believe to be a good public school (Ranked 15th in VA and 325th in the country according to USnews.com). I see that many of my favorite colleges have roughly 75-90% of their incoming freshman being in the top quarter of their class. Is a top quarter rank (at a minimum) what schools like Richmond, Boston U, and Northeastern expect?

Your stats like GPA, test scores, class rigor, ECs, letters of rec, etc. generally are far more important than your class rank. The higher, the better, of course, but it will neither make you or break you.

top 25% is great! I don’t think its really a requirement, but you’ll see that they find many top notch students that are in the top 25% of their classes.

Look at the Common Data Set for each school, section C7 to see what they use for admission.
