Can someone who goes to UGA tell me what it's like there?

Student life, dorms, quality of the professors, athens...basically anything.

I went on a tour a while back and the campus was pretty, but we didn't do much.

In short, UGA is an excellent state school with a very high quality of student life.

Professors vary in quality just like at any other school- you'll have some really good ones and some not-so-good ones, but if you plan your schedule carefully you can have an incredible academic experience. UGA has some stellar profs. in journalism, business, education, the sciences, and public/international affairs, but you can find excellent ones in other departments as well. If you're in the honors program, the academic quality is top-notch- I've rarely been disappointed by an honors class and they're all taught by great professors.

Dorms again vary- you can choose to live in the high-rises, which are very social, or you can choose more relaxed, smaller settings. Just apply for housing early to make sure you get your first choice and be sure to do some research on the housing options before you apply.

The quality of student life is very high- there are always tons of activities on campus and off campus, so no matter what your interests you certainly won't lack for things to do. Fall is football season and student life is basically organized around football- which even for the more academically inclined is really fun, since it's a common bond that unites all students and alumni. Other sports are also quite popular, including gymnastics and basketball, and students of course get really, really cheap tickets.

Athens is a beautiful town that's conveniently organized around the UGA campus. Downtown backs up direct to UGA and is full of restaurants, coffeehouses, clubs, bars, etc. for blocks and blocks and there's always something open no matter how late or early it is. Definitely a big music scene as well. It's all close together so I got around fine on a bike with only an occasional car trip to the grocery store. Off-campus housing is relatively cheap and plentiful.

Basically, UGA has a place for the whole range of students from hippie northeastern liberals to good ol' boy southerners; there's always people to meet and things to do, along with a nice Southern charm. Academically, if you take advantage of all the opportunities UGA offers, it can be an extremely strong and rewarding experience.
