I am looking at a number of colleges in the south. I'm from all the way up in Michigan but I've spent a lot of time in the Tampa area and I love it. I am thinking about minoring in spanish and majoring in either international relations or public relations/communications, although this may change. Basically I'm not going down the science/math path. So I was wondering what USF is like! What are it's best programs? Is it oos friendly? Is the campus nice? Is Greek life a big deal there? Is it hard to get into?

I’m a USF alumna, and I’m currently enrolled as a grad student working toward a master’s while working off campus at a full-time job too. I love USF!

USF is quite diversified with over 140 countries represented on campus. Majors in most any field are available to undergraduate students, certainly Spanish language and other majors which could be used to compliment a career in international relations are available. Major in most any field of study as an undergrad, get a job overseas after graduating for 2 or 3 years, and then get a master’s in International Relations after gaining some real world experience and you’ll be prepared for a successful career in International Relations.

Greek life is active at USF, as well as many other activities suited for most any interest.

USF admissions are competitive, but not impossible…almost 2900 new freshmen just enrolled at USF for fall 2013 cohort.

USF’s football team will be up your way at Michigan State for game tomorrow…and I think they play us down here in Tampa in a couple of years.

Good luck…and Go Bulls!

[Another Record-Setting Class Enters USF - University of South Florida](http://news.usf.edu/article/templates/?a=5660&z=210)

USF is the best. Every one enjoys being here. All the professors and advisers are extremely friendly and encouraging. Your classes are taught by professors not T.A.'s except labs. There are a diverse amount of people and clubs to connect with. I am in engineering and I think its great but the business side of campus is great as well especially if you get into the Bulls Business community. They are really helpful for business majors from what I hear. Tampa Bay is right next door so getting a job right out of college or internship is pretty easy to do.

Our son attends USF- he is in his second year- and he still hopes to make USF friends. He is a really nice guy. It seems that for one reason or another, he’s facing challenges socially. Hard to understand this. Last year’s pals seem to have vanished. His roommate last year was absent most of the time, which was a shame. One of the guys he hung out with, in his suite, announced last May he wouldn’t be returning- his girlfriend had a baby in another country. This year his randomly assigned roommates are in an off campus USF apartment and they like weed - This isn’t his scene. He says that he doesn’t want to do weed and/or drink but that he feels there are not too many others like him. He was a little reticent to get involved with the Greek Life- not sure why-he’s athletic, he can be really really funny- for some reason he just didn’t feel welcome. Maybe things will improve for him. I hope so. Sorry I could not offer glowing feedback. Maybe things will improve for my son - maybe he’ll find like minded friends. Maybe his experience is unique- and yours might be much better. Maybe some kind soul at USF will realize how he’d be a great guy to include in some fun activity. We are still hopeful. There is a USF center for student involvement but it seems geared to Freshman or Transfer Students. I’ve called them a few times and they are very, I mean VERY nice- but his schedule- with all evening classes-(What an unlucky schedule) well, that prevents him from attending almost all of the activities, so maybe there really is no remedy. We’re watching this closely. It is a little worrisome.
Whatever you decide- Know that all experiences are unique. Timing is everything. Your destiny could be USF and things could go very well for you. If you decide to go to USF- try hard not to get evening classes. Maybe you could join USF clubs if you don’t have evening classes. Or maybe you could get involved in Intramurals. Get connected early and stay connected. Best to you.

mom, everyone has different dispositions and it can be difficult sometimes adjusting to college and making new friends. Your son should consider getting new roommates by asking for a room change with his apartment’s management or USF Housing if he’s on campus in a dorm. Have him explain that roommates are using marijuana and he wants a room change.

If he is athletic, the USF Rec Center is open most of day and there is always something to do there. He should hang out less at his room and try to spend most of his time on campus getting involved in stuff. Try to get daytime classes…I don’t think I took but one course that met at night in four years as undergrad. Good Luck!

Thanks Lizard. We call him alot and we coach him alot, and it is amazing how resilient he has been, considering the challenges he faces. He’s such a nice guy and we hope the best for him. We tell him all the time that there is power in positive thinking. (PS At the apartment where he lives- Unfortunately- the apartment manager could not be of any help. There is no way to switch roommates right now ) I wonder if the rec center activities involve groups? Worth looking into.

Do most people here live on campus? It isn’t a mostly commuter college right?

Mostly freshmen live on campus, but that is due to the USF freshmen housing requirement. It is a bit of a commuter school yes, but campus life is still fun and there is a lot going on. It is better to live on campus anyway. You can go to everything that way and its not a far drive. It is quieter on the weekends, but there is always something to do outside of the campus too.
