What is UVa good at, exactly?

Everyone knows that UVa is ranked the second best public school in the nation, but after looking at its department rankings, what does it exactly excel in?

After skimming through some of the posts, many have said that UVA engineering is terrible. Is UVa engineering a complete failure? How about biomedical engineering? Do UVa engineering graduates have a lot of job opportunities?

I’m not sure where you got the impression that the E school is “terrible”. Can you clarify? There have been many wonderful comments from current students, parents, and alumni in recent weeks.

Thanks for the quick reply. UVa is definitely a good school hands down, but what are some of its academic strengths? I was just wondering whether the engineering department is worth going to at UVa.

From your other posts it seems that you think UVA is full of “white, rich people” and now you hear that UVA’s engineering school is “terrible”, I suggest that you look elsewhere. I simply can’t tell if you’re being a ■■■■■ or if you’re that naive to believe someone else’s off-the-mark opinion.

You can also search for posts by MechWahoo and shoebox10. Both are in the engineering school here and have written substantial posts about their experiences over the years.

Sorry if it sounded like a ■■■■■, but I wasn’t attempting to. I am not at all biased towards UVa. And I wouldn’t consider some comments “off the mark” though, because some of them make good points. I just wanted to ask this question: Why choose UVa engineering?

To choose you have to have more than one choice. Until you have more than one choice to compare to then how can you possibly choose. Just saying. UVA is a great school and e-school may be reeeeeally hard but you’ll get a lot out of it and probably get a job (sorry I don’t have any numbers to validate that statement but I’m sure they’re available somewhere). So it just depends on the specific opportunities it gives you (degree prestige, research, whatever) are more than your other choices.

Academics and athletics… it seems like people put down the e-school so much when in fact their biomed engineering program, for example, is one of the best in the country.

UVA is full of TJ Asians. The best parties are thrown by the minority / cultural organisations.

just sayin the truth

(btw the e-school has an excellent programme but someone seriously needs to renovate the mech building. I understand it’s historic and all, but … )

Keep in mind, OP, that at the e-school and I imagine at the other schools as well, teamwork matters.

What if I compare it to schools which are prestigious, but not notable for their engineering programs? Does UVa compare with dartmouth, for example?

UVa engineering > Darmouth engineering. Hands effing down. The engineering schools that are going to “beat” UVa are GT, MIT, CalPoly, etc. And that’s because the BRIGHTEST people in their fields often end up there or come out of those places. There’s no way you can compare UVa kids to MIT grads. But, if you were accepted to MIT/CalPoly, you wouldn’t be on here trying to compare UVa engineering to Dartmouth.
So, follow Dean J’s advice and search. There’s been A LOT of talk about the engineering school recently.

PS- i’m about to be a BS grad from the e-school, and I, like all of my peers, have post-grad opportunities that would beyond amaze you. All people seem to care about these days are jobs jobs jobs. But, if you look beyond that, you’ll realize UVa engineering is good for stuff like a broad education, specialized departments that are top-notch, a magnitude of research/internship opportunities, and a beautiful school.

thanks guys. Today I just talked to someone that graduatd from UVa. He said the engineering department was extremely difficult. Your right shoebox, I didn’t get into MIT/caltech/stanford. I think I’m going to enroll at UVa. THanks!!

If you are in the position to visit UVa for yourself and tour the engineering school, talk to the professors, ask these questions. Sometimes a student will choose a school based on what a school is doing research in. UVa aerospace is involved in research on the scramjet. The engineering school has a new partnership with Rolls Royce…sounds like they have faith in TJ’s University :)

Students that have UVa as their top destination are not always students that can not compare with GTech or MIT. Some want what they feel is a more well rounded education. They may feel more comfortable on the campus, and don’t want to spend four years in a think tank, nor do they want their careers to head in that direction. Top employers want engineers that can think AND interact with fellow employees and clients. They do not always want cookie cutters and machines. Great engineers come out of each university…make no mistake UVa turns out some of the best engineers in the industry.

I think your asking yourself the wrong question. Refrase the question to “what exactly isn’t good at UVA” because thats easy to awnser… nothing is not good at uva…

Didn’t the founder of MIT teach at UVA for many many years? I think he did alright for himself…

Wahoomb, MIT is better than UVa when it comes to engineering, hands down. Let’s not try to dodge that point

ok, obviously and no one would ever refute that, but it’s not a piece of ***** as many in this forum are trying to portray it as, at least basing it off the jobs that my friends have gotten.

You’re preaching to the choir my friend. I’m a proud example of success from the e-school, and there’s a lot of my classmates doing even better.

Just curious but what kind of post-grad opportunities are you & your classmates
getting…grad schools, jobs, etc. Are any of the UVA e-school grads staying
on for their masters at UVA?
