What is Wrong With Me?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with my application, and am starting to think it is my EC's. In my opinion, I have good EC's but feel like they look lousy to colleges. My main EC is work. I've worked at the same job since 8th grade for 15hrs + a week. However, on my CA I couldn't put down "president" or "founder" so it looks like another lousy EC...

Here is what I put on my app:

• Employee at – Pre-Freshman year through current; work as Sales-Assistant controlling cash register, mixing paint, and helping customers.
• Associate Editor of School’s Political Newspaper – Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years; write and assign articles.
• Recreational Basketball League– Pre-Freshmen year through current; captain this and previous year.
• Indoor and Outdoor Track – Have participated in at least one season every year of High School. Varsity Letter received Sophomore year. Placed in both pole-vault and long jump at City Championships.
• Volunteer – the * – Program associated with Medical Center where volunteers read to children waiting to see social workers. (2010 ~ 2011)
• Founder of Business Club – Freshmen and Senior years; Current president of club; Set up school-wide Virtual Stock Exchange competition; plan meetings and events.

Thanks guys, tell me what you think.

Why do you think something is wrong…?

I don’t know, I’m just second guessing all my applications. I was just denied at UF, one of my safetys, or so I thought.

Dude your EC’s are way better than most people’s. If I recall correctly your SAT score was a bit low (like 1900’s??). anyway, i bet you’ll get into UVA. good luck and dont stress, it’s no use

Yea, I just don’t understand it. I feel beyond horrible right now. I have a 33 ACT and 3.85u/w GPA. I though UF was a lock.

hey man don’t even stress it. they are missing out, and i’m not just saying that. wait to hear from the schools that you REALLY wanna go to, and if you’re really nervous, maybe you could consider applying to Hendrix (rolling admissions) - it’s a really underrated school

They’re not amazing, but they’re good. Certainly sufficient.

If you would still be a Florida resident, you might look at NCF, “The Honors College of Florida”, with a deadline of 2/15, if you can act quickly.

Don’t worry Florida admissions is strange. People who have 4.0’s are rejected while people with 3.0’s are accepted. I think it is because they think that you will go to a better school. For example, I know a kid who got rejected from UF but got into NYU Stern.

People have to realize that only TOP TOP colleges care about EC’s. I’m sure UF looks almost exclusively at academics. They probably denied you admission because they thought you wouldn’t attend it?

Others with higher stats were accepted, though it may have been that he was considered out of state under dubious circumstances.

If a college asks for information (grades, scores, essays, activities, classes, et cetera), you can believe that they’re including it in their decision, even as a consideration for borderline cases. It simply wouldn’t be logical for them to request that information otherwise.

Work is considered a wonderful EC at top colleges. I recall an admissions rep from Tufts saying that it is one of the most impressive parts of an application.

I would agree. That seems to be one of the OP’s better activities in preparing him for the future.

Well at this stage, I might not have a future…

(Pessimism at its best)

Well, you’ll get into FSU. You could apply to NCF if you felt like it.

You’re already accepted elsewhere, you might get aid. Plus, there are others you’ve applied to. Don’t worry, you have a future.

I didn’t apply for aid BillyMc. On the FA calculators, it said my parents would have to pay well over the tution for the 4 years… And for FSU, who knows. I thought I was into UF. 1 day later, and here I am debating community college.

UVAorBust, your posts on the UVA forum are always interesting and positive, but really man, really?? You got into UMich Honors and Boston college. There’s no reason you should be debating community college. Come on man, your better than that. (Mark Jackson, lol :)

I think it’s pointless stressing over your ECs and whatnot in February. Your applications are in, and there’s nothing you can do. Relax a little. :)

I know a kid this year that was rejected by Florida, but accepted (so far) at, in order of USNWR ranking, UC Irvine, Tulane, SMU, and is under Augmented Review at UC Berkeley and UCLA, which means they’re on the bubble and going through extra review. rejected nowhere else.

how can I relax when I know the decisions will be coming out in the next 2-3 weeks, oh my Lord …

are you Floridian. If you are out of state it is almost impossible to get in as the state government requires UF to have “at least” 80% of its admits be from UF and with 90% of Florida kids applying there out of state chances are extremely low. Plus I know kids who got into Harvard and Penn who didn’t get in to UF (they were out of state) don’t stress about it
