Wondering what a day as a Duke Student is like. I know schedules are different for everyone, but typically what time to classes start/end? When do you eat/take breaks/go out with friends? Any information would be helpful :)

So… classes.

The earliest classes are 8:30 classes, and I have 3 of them. That’s just the way it worked with my schedule because I’m taking chinese. Before that, though, I had a schedule where my earliest class was at 11:25. classes generally end around/earlier than 4, but it is totally up to you to arrange your schedule however you like.

Thanks Mandoggy!

So about how many classes do you generally have a day? Or does it depend as to how you arrange it?

You can schedule your classes (as with most schools). Some majors really don’t have requirements. You can have all afternoon classes for 3 days a week. Other majors, especially engineering/sciences, have specific classes that you must take, which often dictates your scheduling.

Duke is large enough that you’ll get a decent amount of choices (as opposed to small LAC) and small enough that not you don’t have to worry (much) about not getting in a class and not being able to graduate on time (like many large public flagships).

Thanks Zonlicht :)

Also, while on the subject of class scheduling, just wondering about the transportation? Do you find yourself going back and forth between east and west campus a lot? I’ve heard the walk is about 30 minutes so… I’d rather take the shuttle but not sure how long that takes or how often they come by.

Also, how long are the classes usually? like 2 hours or so?

And in between classes what do you guys usually do before your next one?

Sorry for the stock questions but really trying to get an idea of a typical idea at Duke :)

Most classes meet 3-4 hours a week, languages usually 5 x 1 hour, most classes at 2x or 3x a week. There are classes that meet 1x a week.

Shuttle goes from East to West every few minutes. A significant percentage of freshmen classes are on East Campus. Not many upper level classes are on East (save for some departments, I think writing? possibly film?). There are also classes on Central Campus. Barely anyone walks between campuses. Some juniors/seniors living on Central Campus/off campus bike to class.

You are in college, you can do whatever you want in between classes.

the majority of classes meet either 3 times a week (MWF), 50 minutes each, or 2 times a week (MW, TTh, or WF) for 75 minutes each.

between classes I usually grab food, do homework, browse the internet, or if there’s enough time go take a nap.

Thanks a lot guys :)
