What are your favorite and least favorite parts about tufts and attending or just what you have seen in general from an external perspective?
I also got acceptes yesterday, so I’m keeping an eye out for this answer!
My daughter’s top positive is the people, and the various campus groups that allows everyone to find a niche. I will add she really seems to enjoy the character and caliber of people she’s met. Second year, she’s become active in the campus radio station and club volleyball, and also has written for the campus magazine. There’s a small, but decent Greek life, though after rushing she decided against it and is happy with the choice, as that tends to define one’s social life almost exclusively. The proximity to Boston, Cambridge and the art and music scene in both places has always been a big draw. Food seems to be a neutral, I’ve enjoyed eating in the dining hall when I’ve visited, but I think that gets old pretty fast for most students. As a parent of a daughter, I’ve liked the fact that campus seems quite safe, as does the surrounding area of Davis Square. She has not expressed any concerns about walking around campus at night.
My son is first year, but he very quickly integrated into the school community by continuing something old (Wind Ensemble) and starting something new (club quidditch). He found his first friend group with his pre-orientation “wilderness family”, who remain close, and branched off from there. Most recently, he joined a fraternity. I think that he would agree with Naspy’s daughter that the people are the top positive.
*** What I find so remarkable about his Tufts experience, compared to my own collegiate first year, is his exposure to upper-classmen. He rubs shoulders with a lot of them through these activities and in classes. Along with their perspective and comments, his ability to learn the ropes and to grow has been accelerated quite a bit.
