What is Your Hook.

Harvard2011,

Yeah, you're an URM.

For the purpose of this discussion; I don't believe being a URM or legacy should be considered a hook. Unless of course, you have one of those COMBINED with a special talent, skill, passion, experience, etc.

I just don't know how being a legacy or a URM makes one all that unique. That is just my personal opinion.

I don't know if these are considered "hooks" - but it's how I've spent my high school years...

2200 hours community service to date

I don't know if it is a hook but it is definitely IMPRESSIVE! Probably depends on the schools where you are applying.

One thing to keep in mind is that the pool of applicants to the highly selective schools have a lot of CS, national recognition of some kind and of course high STATS. Although your achievements are wonderful and seem to show a passion in journalism; there are probably a ton of other applicants that also have a passion in journalism as well. So, what may be a hook at one school; might not be a hook at another. Depends on the individual schools AND the pool of applicants for that given year. Again, congratulations on your achievements.

Well, several of the ad coms I interviewed with asked me to submit specific samples of my published work, so maybe that means something.

I am not applying to schools for journalism. I write and it's what I do well, but I'd like to explore different professional avenues in college.

Well, I think having that passion outside of your academic interests is a real plus!

I read so much about interviews with adcoms. I do not see any opportunites for interviews with the schools where I am applying. What is the deal on this?

Schoolgurl: You've already interviewed with colleges, even before submitting your applications?

Yup. Visited 10 schools this summer, interviewed at 8.

Any girl from outside usa that is appliying to the top schools, I live in Guatemala, and I am going to apply this winter, anyone wants to know me ja ja

I love God. I am serious. I dedicate a lot of time to activities related to this. I do not consider myself that type of guy, that is very boring and goes to church like an old lady. I am very active. do the colleges have something like a antichristian thing?

mafp345: American living in Guate or are you a Guatemalan?

Not a hook definitely, but I would be considered an international student. Malaysian-born, but lived in Malaysia, USA, Vietnam, Indonesia and Romania. (A little disappointed I've only lived in 3 continents compared to some of my friends here. :P) Diversity-hook, instead? Uhm...SAT's are okay, IB Diploma Student, CAS hours...

I'd rather have some NEGATIVE hooks, instead. Depressed, used-to-be-suicidal, not so impressive grades (damn C+ in chemistry and I want to study biochemistry/biotech in uni/college), going to finish high school when I'm 19 years, 11 months old...

Yeah...

wallowing in self-pity

Um...

Research with National Cancer Institute, working on a big anti-HIV project right now. Most likely will publish data.

Also, top notch rec from my supervisor

Guatemalan living in Guatemala, but soon living in the north east! or Stanford!
and you

That's not a hook. That's called 'being a teenager'.

You should go to a religious school. Like Bob Jones University or Messiah college. Oh, and watch the movie "Saved", you'll like it.

I agree with you on legacy, but, depending on the situation, not with URM's. You really have to admire people that overcome adversity and strive to be better, even though they're given so little at the beginning. It shows true character and proves motivation that goes beyond the average preppy school kid who's handed everything on a silver platter.

Awesome way to express your writing abilities aside from your essay(s). Your published work would be a great supplement.

Assuming that hook is something that I have that they want - I'm a HUGE geography nerd and most geography departments (esp at liberal arts schools) are very underrepresented. I've heard of a lot of geography programs on the brink of collapsing because there's just not enough interest. Pretty much all of my essays are about how I love the discipline and how I use it for everything (well, in a much more creative sense....). So, yes. If I have a hook, that's it.

I'm not sure exactly what a "hook" is, although judging by these posts I think I can figure it out.

At my number one choice, I am sort of a legacy (my mother graduated from there and my sister currently attends that college). I want to get into the International Relations school, and I spent a month in the middle east living on a remote military base (1 sq mile in the middle of the desert) with multinational peacekeepers. I think if I write an essay about that it could help from the IR standpoint.

I hope these are the kind of things you all mean by "hook", if not I will feel indredibly stupid!!

i have many disabilities. that's my hook.
