what is...

your least favorite part about college applications?

Mine is definitely asking for recommendations!

I feel so awkward and guilty when I ask for them!

I asked my English teacher at the end of junior year, and it went sort of like this...
Me (nervously): Um, I was going to ask you this earlier, but I was wondering if maybe you would consider writing my college recommendations next year? [implied: "...but if you don't that's okay too, I'll just ask someone else, I wouldn't want to be a burden..."]
Him: Of course, I'd be happy to.

With my chemistry teacher it was awkward in a different way. I was going to ask him in private after class (the first class of senior year), but it didn't exactly happen that way.
Him: So, how many of you want me to write your college recs?
Me, along with most of the class: raises hand
Him: Oh, okay. Now, organic chemistry...

hehehe...well I already asked one teacher (one of my teachers from precollege at RISD) and she said she'd love to and to just send her an email once I start applying to schools. Though I'm not quite sure if she realized that I'm only a junior. I'll probably ask my English teacher either at the end of this year or beginning of next. She already wrote me one to get into a summer program this year. I've never really been nervous asking teachers for things. What is going to bother me next year is probably the essays. I will worry about them like crazy.

Also, waiting for responses. The anticipation will kill me.

Waiting for transcripts, and other documents to arrive at the colleges and have them processed, so you KNOW for SURE that haven't been lost in the mail.

Are you serious? ESSAYS are the worst!

I agree--recommendations was the EASIEST part! Essays were definitely the hardest. Waiting isn't "hard" or "easy"...it's just there...

I kind of feel dumb asking for recommendations. It's like asking someone to say a lot of nice things about you... and you don't do anything for them. It was awkward for me, but not insanely unbearable.

Probably the hardest part for me is the waiting. I only really have problems with the supplemental essays, like the "why xyz college" ones. It's hard for me to come up with a unique answer for every one.

writing the "why x college" essay. Those are sooo tough for me. Especially when I live in Oklahoma and my parents can't really afford plane tickets to visit colleges.

I agree with the poster above who said "waiting for transcripts." People with lazy secretaries or gcs know the agony of this.
