And from the messages in here, they seem to be really important. Can someone please talk me through how you'd go about it?

I'm going to be a junior come Sept. 7th. When should I ask my teachers for recommendations?

And what about this whole "stamp and mail" thing? Do the teachers mail the recommendations, or do you take the letters from them and mail it yourselves? And what about the rec. from your guidance counselor?

And I feel really bad asking my teachers for recs for more than just one school. What are your experiences with this sort of thing? Would they get annoyed? Especially if you’re not the only one asking…

You ask when you apply, during your last year of high school. As for multiple schools, the Common Application helps with that, since they don’t have to fill out separate forms for each school on it.

The Common App guides you through it for the Common App schools. And In addition to what BillyMc said, if your school does do stamp and mail for some reason (many seem to although I have NO idea why), the teacher doesn’t have to write a specialized rec for each school - just print off another copy.

You should ask your teachers late this spring or as early as possible next fall. Be sure to a) give them enough time, b) ask them “can you write me a stong rec” because if they waffle you can find a teacher who will, and c) remind them who you are and what in particular you want them to say about you.

It’s good that you’re trying to do it right, but don’t panic. :D
