I love this school so much that I fear my reaction when I don't get in.
Post some negatives about Yale to temper my passionate enthusiasm!

You should post this question in the Harvard and Princeton forums.

Yale’s my dream school; I wouldn’t be so upset if I didn’t get into Princeton. The same question is already on the Harvard forum, posted by someone else long ago.

I mean, ask them what’s not so great about Yale. They’ll have lots to say.

OH haha I feel like no one really has anything bad to say about Yale unless they attend a rival school…

Besides its tendency to lose “the game” to Harvard, Yale has no negatives. (I may be a tad biased, however).

If New Jersey didn’t exist, New Haven, CT would be the most undesirable place in America.

^^ Haha! While that may have been true ten years ago, it’s no longer the case. The area surrounding the university has become quite ‘gentrified’ – much more like dowtown Princeton or Harvard Square. See: [UP CLOSE | Building the ?new? New Haven | Yale Daily News](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/2012/apr/17/building-the-new-new-haven/)

LOL! But seriously, one negative I’d identify (of course it depends on your personal disposition) would be the (over?)seriousness of many of the students. Of course, they didn’t get where they are by being frivolous! I did sense a bit of a pall over the campus some days though. A lot of ‘grinds’… maybe because personally I’m not that way myself. It might have been my own mood though ;)

OTOH, you’ll find the same thing at any first-rate school. (Supposedly less so at Stanford, which I don’t know personally.)

The dining halls close too early, there’s not enough distance between us and Qpac, the campus is nauseatingly politically correct, the YCC elections rival our national politics in terms of stupidity and superficiality, and many of the DS/YPU types take themselves and their views way too seriously – to the point of being incapable of concession/compromise (yes, I’ve seen friendships destroyed over dumb political arguments).

Other than that, a generally great school.

New Haven

Is New Haven really that rough?

^Please use the Search function on this forum for ‘New Haven’ as there are several past threads asking this question.

Dining services are not particularly well managed (though the food itself is quite good), DUH is far away, and campus can be quite bureaucratic.

im considering yale as a university to attend…how smart do you have to be to get in and hold your own? dont know if im ivy-league-quality (only a freshman in HS)
do you think that yale is the best ivy league for quality? the thread talks about dining/location/politics…

Many successful ivy league students are quite smart. A few are truly brilliant, but the people (at least at yale) who tend to get very high GPAs get there with more hard work than anything else. Yes, they’re also very bright, but the student with a strong work ethic will outperform the brilliant but lazy student much of the time. So, if you’re bright, and willing to work hard, you can be successful.

Getting requires those two things and the highly subjective factor of being “interesting” as well.

“best ivy league for quality” is a very nebulous question. I think Yale is the best Ivy for me, and I’d of course like to call it the best Ivy overall, but different people find themselves better suited to different schools. Yale welcomes all types, but if you’re dead set on engineering, you might find Princeton or Cornell to fit just as well or better.

Their admit rate really sucks. That should be good enough to temper your enthusiasm.

They reject a lot of extremely qualified kids. Here’s what I told my extremely qualified kid - don’t let your love grow too much because an admission at Yale is not something that you can assume. Turned out that was the case.

If you get in because you are extremely lucky as well as being brght, great - otherwise, just remember it is much more likely to be not admitted.

That’s why I started this thread, texaspg!

@iUniversity: you’re new to CC, I see. May I suggest you spend some time at various colleges’ websites, describing the typical profile of successful applicants?

I have a concern for you: your question “how smart do you have to be to get in” belies a rather fundamental lack of knowledge of the entrance qualifications for one of the most selective colleges on this planet. Plz do some of your own independent research and come back to CC for specific questions.
