I'm trying to help my friend figure out what he should major and job he is trying to get. He said he wants to be one of those people you see at conventions that promote a product. Not really sure if that's a real job because everytime I see them, they are like the lead game designer, founder of the product, etc. I told him his best bet is to focus on a single type of industry (technology, cars, etc) and get a degree that is fundamental to that like information systems, mechanical engineering, etc with a minor in public speaking.

like you said, it isn’t really a specified job and is usually just given to someone with alot of knowledge of the product(execs in the business)

If not the founder or a principal, it may also be a sales or marketing person that gets sent to conventions. Why does he like the idea of promoting stuff? Sounds like marketing/ PR/ sales etc. These can be majors on their own, or he could do as you suggested and study some particular area and then look for a job selling/marketing/informing people about products in that area. (software, pharmaceuticals, various equipment for research or business)

Well he said he doesnt like the research side of marketing because he doesnt necessarily want to “advertise”, just make pitches and sell something directly to the customer. Like we work for the food department for our university and his favorite thing to do is be a hawker (at sports events, carry around stuff to sell directly to the customer) and if he could do that making decent money, he would love it.

My only thoughts would be someone who sold really expensive stuff and made commission off of like a car salesman. Not really experienced in business enough to know if that’s accurate or what other things there are.
