I know plenty of wealthy people who don't own 6000 sq. ft. homes (especially if they live in an expensive or heavily built-up area) or buy cars every 2 years "at the least."

The latter statement is actually ridiculous. Think of it: if you like the car you're driving, why would you buy a new one in less than two years? I would say a more accurate picture would be "relatively new car bought for over $50,000."

Even that is a generalization. The best way to categorize wealth is net worth. If your parents make lots of money and aren't in debt, then you are wealthy.

i wouldn't neccessarily categorize by the size of the house because what will get you a small mansion in north dakota may well get you a condo in california or new york. i'd say we're comfortable, but our house size certainly isn't in your range since some really unspectacular real estate is going for $475,000 to $975,000 around here. and some people just aren't big spenders.

Yeah, those are terrible definitions justperfect. My dad drives a 1992 Acura (hell, it's worse than my car) and we're borderline top 1%. He does have about $50,000 worth of bikes though.

dad - executive director in IT at morgan stanley
mom - doesn't work

I would consider us a notch below wealthy, we live in an affluent neighborhood in essex county and my parents can pay for college out of their pockets but my house isn't enormous its around 4000 sq. ft. and my parents drive $35k cars. (not cars that cost 50 grand)

People in Cali will laugh at your description of poor prople living in 2000 sq. ft. houses. A recent sale in my area for a million dollars is 1200 sq. ft. on an eighth of an acre.

Dad: Sales rep for Castrol
Mum: Supervisor at local credit union
Average income for here. Combined would be about 50,000 euro a year. I pay for college myself, but I live at home.

Not even close to being comfortable. I work my a** off and pay for everything I use/buy. EFC of 0 haha. I bought my first car after working 2 yrs straight, and I love it :) I'm going to have to pay for all my college tuition, and I don't really mind. My family moved to US like 3 yrs ago, and I'm kinda proud of what we have and I have achieved now :)
