What Kind of Aid Do You think I'll Get?

Hi! Here are my stats:

-Transfer student from NYU
-Want to attend a state school in Texas or California
-I'm a NY resident
-I have a 3.0 GPA so far as a sophomore at NYU
-1190 on SAT
-24 ACT
-3.6 HS GPA
-Many extracurriculars/community service
-I'm black/african-american (does that even matter anymore)
-I'm a first-generation college student
-My parents make less than $90000
-I'm leaving NYU due to financial woes
-And I'm coming from freakin' NYU!

Out of state tuition for TX and CA state schools is usually about $9000. How much do you think I'll end up having to pay?

You would probably end up paying most of it and you must also include room and board (unless you have someplace there to call home). Be prepared as the tranfer process for an out of state resident is really going to be hard.

all the best.

I doubt that you'll get a good deal.

You'll probably do much better by transferring to a public university in your state. It's very hard to get need and merit-based scholarship money when you go to an out of state public institution. It's even harder if you're a transfer student.

In addition, by going so far out of state, you'd have to pay more transportation costs, which can take a big bite out of your budget.

Other things to consider: I get about $8000 in federal aid at NYU that will transfer with me...

My sister works for a major airline, so I fly for free.

California State school out of state is likely to cost you about 27K per year. UC out of state will cost you about 39K per year. With a parental income of close to 90K you are unlikely to get much if any aid - apart from stafford loans.

Here are some links to the budgets for UCSD - one of the cheaper UC schools, and Chic- one of the cheaper Cal State schools.

<a href="http://www.csuchico.edu/fa/home/about/how.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.csuchico.edu/fa/home/about/how.html</a>
<a href="http://fao.ucsd.edu/forms/5budgetUG.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://fao.ucsd.edu/forms/5budgetUG.pdf</a></p>

Its going to be very expensive.

You must remember that your federal aid is given in context with the cost of your school and does not travel on a dollar for dollar basis. You currently attend a school which is approximately $40,000 per year. If you go where the cost of attendance is considerable lower, with the exception of the loan components the rest of the aid will be lower.

with 2 major airlines declaring bankruptcy this week and the airline employees making more concessions and giving back more stuff, I would not look at your free flying benefit as a long term solution because it can be lost in the next contract negotiation

If she gets a Pell grant, that's completely independent of the cost of the school. BAsed solely on family income. Other fed aid, as sybbie said, dependent on school costs and their methods of divying up the federal dollars.
