what kind of financial aid does st. john's offer?

What kind of financial aid does st. john's university (NY) offer? Kind of thinking about going there but their tuition is kind of high. Does any one know?

I believe St. John’s gets 51,000 applicants–at least, I am pretty sure that is what they told me in the last month or 2 (easy to check on Common Data Set). That said, I work with students in a nearby state, most of whom have average scores and grades–and their aid packages from St. John’s have been LOUSY. Several of them included large amounts of loans and THEN over $20,000 in Parents Plus loan–per year! So it looked like they met the full cost–but only if one was very naive, or willing to commit financial suicide.

Aid could be much higher for more academically outstanding students, but with those application numbers–just how much can they offer all those students they accept? (I do not know their acceptance or yield rate).

I don’t think the need-based aid is good, but a few kids with high stats have reported getting partial/full tuition scholarships…with parents paying the rest of the costs (room/board/books/etc). I don’t know if those are for only some majors…these kids were pre-pharm who posted.

This is not a good stat…

Number who were offered aid: 2,585

Number who had full need met: 192 (that’s very few that had their need met…that looks like kids who had high EFCs, so need was more easily met.)

Gurl…what are your stats? Can you commute? Some kids do that to save $10k in COA.

@mom2CK, St. John’s called my home(several times) and offered to match the offer I received from Maryland. Their merit aid appears to be rather ad hoc. What was REALLY weird was that I never submitted a completed application.

i live on the other side of the country so commuting is out of the question
um
unweighted GPA: 3.83
weighted GPA: 4.21 or something like that can’t remember
SAT: 1800
i am rank 5 in my school
not sure what else you will need

anyway i am decided between st. john’s and ucla where i only have to pay around 10k a year but with the way the state’s economy is right now i don’t know if i wanna go there. thanks for the help

Pluma…you have stellar stats, so it doesn’t surprise me that St. John’s was trying to get you on their campus. I wouldn’t suggest that their merit is “ad hoc”…I would say they target it towards kids with high stats that will help their stats/ranking.

*anyway i am decided between st. john’s and ucla where i only have to pay around 10k a year *

??? Are you a senior? If so, are you expecting to get a FA package from St. John’s soon?

Do you only have to pay $10k for UCLA because of Cal Grants or other aid because of lowish income? If so, then it’s not likely that St. John’s is going to work for you because your stats may not be high enough for their big merit awards.
