say i'm at penn state as undecided or in the school of liberal arts. what gpa would i need to maintain to transfer into smeal and when could i transfer?

I think it varies a little depending on whether you want accounting or finance or economics or whatever. I know a student entering junior year who wanted to transfer in to smeal from "undecided". I believe he needed a 3.5 (or it might have been 3.4) to get into his major of choice, but he was 0.03 short and didn't get his first choice, although he did get into a different major in smeal.

You can transfer in as a sophomore with a 3.0. The gpa required for the various business majors vary from 3.3 for finance to 2.0 for economics as a junior (having taken all of the prerequisites).

For the COE, are there advantages/disadvantages for early entrance into a major? Normally, students apply for a major at the end of their Sophomore year, but you can also choose to apply at the end of your first year. What does this do?

I think the gpa required for the accounting major was a little higher. Since the kid I know went the summer between hs and freshman year, he was required to declare his major as "undecided" rather than accounting. So now his slightly low gpa is keeping him from the major he intended all along. From what I know, you can take courses from the various departments in the business school, but you must be admitted to a certain major.
