In terms of undergraduate program , I think finance would probably be the best major . But not all colleges offer finance major. So what's the best major for IB?

finance/econ/business/accounting/math…anything that you can spin to show that you’re interested in the field

What about criminal justice?

Having worked at an IB, I can give you this advice: whatever your formal major, your informal major should be in Hustle. Hustle a good internship. Hustle every day as an intern. Hustle good connections to people in the industry. Hustle every job you ever have. Hustle once they hire you, and don’t stop.

I would say what is most important is being able to tell a story. As long as you are in a major that is quantitative (math, science, engineering, econ, etc.), finance and accounting concepts are easy to pick up. Going into IB with a specific industry focus (i.e. I was a Bioengineering major going into Healthcare IBD) separates you from the pack. If you can truly show that you love tech companies and your dream is to work companies like Google and Facebook and bring exciting new tech companies public, you have a greater chance of getting into the tech banking group than someone who was just a finance/accounting major in college.

Quant background is not necessary for investment banking. There are plenty of english and history majors. The key factors include prestige of the school, grades and interview skills. I also agree with the poster suggesting a lot of hustling.

Have strong quant skills. Have strong writing skills. Also–often neglected–have strong presentation skills. Try to take some classes in public speaking, debate, negotiation etc. These skills will help in you presenting your best self. This helps not only in getting a job, but in advancing in your career.

Thanks everyone
I’m a little confused. Does that mean if I want to go to ,say, healthcare IBD I should have a major in bio related field instead of economics ?

I majored in Criminal Justice from DeVry University with a 2.3 GPA. Do I have a shot at investment banking?

No you don’t need to major in bioengineering to go to healthcare IBD. It’s probably harder that way because you have to justify why you didn’t study econ/finance in the first place. Maybe 5% of the healthcare bankers have any kind of medical background.
