I’m just curious how a stranger would see my extra-curricular activities:
-Research at a somewhat prestigious summer program
-Independent research at a local (top 20) university (same field as above, different place)
-Non-president board member for large debate team
-Gold Award/Eagle Scout (don’t want to give away my gender, and these are somewhat equivalent)
-Youth representative at church committee
-Youth group co-president
-Mock trial (top 5 in state for three years)
-Quizbowl state champions (not a super competitive state)
-USAChO semis and many other smaller awards
I have volunteered ~40+ hours each summer to either science education or a local hospital, and while these experiences have been meaningful to me, I know some of my peers have done a lot more.
You sound very intelligent!
Well-rounded, but also research focused too!
Well rounded
Excellent time management skills
Community oriented
You sound intelligent, involved and compassionate. Also, I would add that your activities suggest that you’re very willing to put others in front of yourself and work hard for things you believe in. Schools will value these differently, but each will certainly appreciate the depth you show simply because of the time, energy and selflessness your resume demonstrates. Ensure you take the time to give yourself enough credit on your applications. It’s hard to do well, but can certainly (and should be) done. Good luck!
Thank you everyone! And lol HereToHelpYou, my parents would laugh at #2, there.
Here’s where I ask a kind of shallow question… Would you say this resume is competitive for top schools (HYPS etc.) or is it too unfocused?
I’d say you can apply - you are good enough to deserve to have your application read. But I don’t know about competitive, to be honest. I wouldn’t say your ECs would help or hinder - they’d be kind of neutral for top schools.
Not bad! But what are you interested in?
