What kind of ratings do you need for HYP?

I just saw one of my teacher's commonapp check box thingies. It was pretty much all "very good (well above average)", with a few "excellent (top 10%)" and a few "good (above average). Would this negatively effect my application? I read somewhere that you need to be AT LEAST top 10% to stay competitive. Should I talk to the teacher?

I don’t think you should ask your teacher to change her ratings. Yes, it will negatively effect your application, probably because she doesn’t think you’re qualified for HYP.

How were you able to see your teacher’s ratings? You shouldn’t be nagging your teacher about it, it is their honest opinion of you.

What they write is more important than what box they check.

Should you talk to the teacher? And say what? He/she gave an honest opinion of you in the context of other students.

The teacher showed me the letter and the check boxses, even though I signed the waiver. I’m slightly confused because the letter was quite personal and definitely suggests that I’m well qualified for HYP.

Ok, I’m not going to nag the said teacher, but should I ask another teacher to do a report and submit that one instead if the ratings are better (assuming letter is the same or better)?

nope. don’t go scavenging for any more reports. those aren’t really that important, those boxes. might be the last thing admission officers look at. u said the letter was good, so that’s plenty

It’s fine. If it was all perfect, it would look bogus and not honest. I very very rarely tick those boxes all at the top level. Every student has strengths and weaknesses. What she writes is what matters.

And no talking to her won’t help so don’t do it. Her judgment is her judgment.
