There is VERY little financial aid at UW. Almost no merit based aid, probably no need-based aid for out of state, and dwindling funds for in-state need-based aid.

You can get some academic scholarships through the Honors program, but they are very selective.

A friend of mine got a full ride when he applied two years ago.

His stats are roughly about:
SAT - 2370
SAT II - Math II: 800, Biology 790 (or 780? near perfect anyway)
ACT - did not submit
GPA - 4.0 unweighted, tons of APs, and dual enrollment in Math 126 and Phys 123 senior year
National Merit Finalist, Valedictorian, National AP Scholar after junior year
He was also well rounded in sports, leadership, and clubs at his high school. He went to a public high school near Seattle.

Basically, financial aid is tight at UW now especially with budget cuts. The Husky Promise is ‘in danger’. More and more competitive applicants are vying for scholarships at UW, and you really have to be a top notch applicant to get a MERIT scholarship.

It is possible to apply for scholarships when you’re in departments or different programs, such as Honors. Here is a link to CSE Departmental Awards, since you’re interested in computer science.

speedsolver, was your friend in state or out of state? I know there are a few big scholarship programs to entice top washington students to stay in the state (namely the Washington Scholars program), but I have yet to hear of anyone from out of state getting such an award as an incoming freshman.

He is an in state student. I’m not sure if he is part of Washington Scholars, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

I know of one other Honors student (Class of 2014) receiving a full ride for Autumn/Winter/Spring quarters (must pay own tuition for Summer quarter) from California this year. I don’t know her stats though.
