What kind of video camera shall I start with?

Hey!=) (kinda nervous coz' it's my very first post >.,<)

I am still a high school student n plan to apply for film undergraduate next year...
although being really interested in films and cinematic art stuff....I ve never touched a video camera in my life so far T.T

I take art in the high school n i am mainly doing drawing, painting plus abit photography that kind of basic stuff

and I think I need to really start to FILM in order to get in the film majors (right?.)
i ll have less than one year left and i m quite sure that i ll be flooded by the graduation stuff, so is it still realistic for me to apply for film?

n..what kind of video camera shall i start with?Suggestions?

thanx alot for any responses n sorry for posting so many "?" ><

I had the same question for my youngest daughter. She’s a HS freshmen and she wants to learn about making movies as well. Others here will have better info than I can offer but I wanted to get her an HD camera but not too expensive so that if she drops or loses it, it won’t be a major hit. I just got her a Canon HFS100 but this one might be a better deal at $400:

[Canon Direct Store- VIXIA HF200 Flash Memory Refurbished](http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_249405_-1)

I also loaded iMovie '09 and Final Cut HD version 7. You’ll need these versions of the software to be able to have the computer recognize the camcorder. My research wasn’t extensive and there might be camcorders that record in the software’s native format (.mov) which would make things easier (I think).

You need something with high quality for your demo reel but reasonable price.

I’ve never made a movie in my life (besides some clips with my flip hd camcorder for facebook) but I’ve been accepted to several colleges with a film major. Depending on where you want to go you will need some creative samples to get into their film programs(UCLA,USC), but most are not like that.Creative samples don’t even require it to be a movie, it could be a film script or tv pilot script, something along those lines. What colleges are you looking at?

The Canon HV series is an impressive, entry level HD camera w/ true 24p shooting features.

Up from there I recommend (and have always used) Panasonic DVX / HVX cameras. From 2500-5000

I personally now use a Nikon d90. Full hd, 24p, cinema lenses for proper depth of field. You can kit one out for about 2k
