What makes a great recommendation letter?

I'm an international applicant from a region where teachers aren't familiar with the process of writing rec letters.

I know that basic contents such as descriptions of academic excellence of a student matter, but what else is needed?

I'm also wondering about how your teachers described about you apart from anyone else.

One that says a lot more about you than what adcoms can see from your transcript and AP scores.

A recommendation that says something about who you are as a person are excellent recommendations. Although I have to say I don’t think either of my recommendations really did any of this.

I have the same question.

I want to ask someone who has never written a college rec letter to write me a rec.

What are some good websites or examples that explain a good rec letter?

What topics should be covered?

[MIT Admissions | Info For Schools & Counselors: Writing Evaluations](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/schools/writing_evaluations/index.shtml)

Here’s a tip sheet that MIT gives to teachers

@HBrown

What I was trying to ask was how do teachers tell about you personally, because the teachers here are only familiar with describing academic abilities and decent manners.

@Hitman

That’s exactly what I’m trying to find…

This was very helpful for me once upon a time.

I remember reading it once.
Thank you though :D

Excellent post. That really covers it.

Passion for academics. They really dig that stuff.

I think what Hitman and I are wondering about is this:

How do teachers describe their students through the recommendation?

ex)Do they include a certain experience? If they do, are there examples?
