We have a choice from Algebra 1, 2, Geometry, Functions, Statistics and Trig, but I've done basic to complex algebra and I haven't covered a very small amount of things in my British curriculum school (year 9, grade 8) therefore I'm not sure what class I'm meant to take. What do you normally take in Math, freshman year? Algebra 1? Geometry?

There is not any standard answer. If you have not taken any advanced math curriculum, you start with Algebra I. It sounds like you would take Geometry as you have completed algebra I, it seems. In my freshman year I took pre-calc because I had already taken algebra I and II (with trig) and geometry.

I know you want to apply to prep schools next year, so I’d recommend Geometry. This is standard in most American schools. However, taking Algebra 2 wouldn’t hurt either…

Mine was Algebra/geometry in one year.

I suggest you take Geometry. Algebra 1 is usually for kids that are repeating the same basic math because they failed it middle school or never had it.

I took Geometry… Funny thing is I took Pre Algebra twice and Algebra twice… So technically I am a year behind.

I took geometry and alg 2 fresham year, my school has a test that determines if you can skip alg 1.

Edit: Oops…sorry shmluza I had a typo, I know it’s freshman…

I’ll be a fresh"men" in September. I’ll take geometry and algebra II at the same time.

For us, we had to take a placement test before our freshman year to determine which math class we would be placed in.

If you didn’t take the placement test, they stuck you in Algebra 1.

Unfortunately, I thought the test was a day later than it really was (oops…) so I missed it and they stuck me in Algebra 1. This bugged me considerably because I was one of the two or three best in my 8th grade math class and my math teacher always told me that I was set for Geometry Honors as a Freshman. Now I’m a year behind the average math students. :/

Took algebra 1 in 7th grade, geometry 8th, algebra 2 9th, currently in pre calculus for 10th

algebra 1 8th, geometry 9th, trig 10th, precalc/statistic 11th, AP calb ab 12th

6th - Pre-Algebra
7th - Algebra I
8th - Geometry
9th - Algebra II
10th - Pre-Calc
11th - AP Calculus AB
12th - whatever the highest level is

This is my plan. I’m currently a freshman.

6th- “Compact Math” - The “smart” math class
7th- Math 7 (my 6th grade teaches hated me and didnt recommend me for honors or Alg I even though I had an A in her class.)
8th- Alg I Honors
9th- Geometry Honors
10th - Alg II Honors
11th- Precalc/Trig Honors
12th (planned) AP Calc BC (or AB if there’s a schedule conflict)

Exactly this. Except I’m also doing AP Cal BC senior year.
Math is my best subject so I’m going ahead and doubling up junior and senior.

Honors Geometry. Joke class. Essentially, I did my HW in class by looking at the formulas in the textbook.
