Hey! So i recently decided that I will go to IU Kelley to study Finance in pursuit of becoming an Investment Banker . Do minors play a large role in IB placement or placement to the workshop at least? I have been thinking of minoring in statistics/math or economics. Thanks in advance.
never mind they do not have stats as a minor so It would be just mathematics
Minors are not very important. The biggest thing is networking. Try to meet as many investment banking students as you can in your first year. Go to some investment banking information sessions and talk to the people there. Networking and grades are going to get you into IB. Your minor is not very relevant, so try to find something you are interested in if you decide to minor.
OP-
iubaccounting is pretty spot on. Choosing to pursue a minor in Mathematics will not materially affect your attractiveness as a IB workshop candidate. In fact, your choice of major will matter very little. I would even contend that doing something other than Finance or Accounting could make you stand out as a unique candidate, provided that you check the boxes on basic technical knowledge.
That being said, a math minor is not difficult to obtain. Provided that you enter with credits from AP Calculus AB/BC - you will only need to take three 300-level math courses in order to complete the minor requirements. DS3 did precisely this, in addition to his Kelley degree. He said the math classes provided more intellectual stimulation than any of his business classes. They are challenging courses, so tread carefully depending on how strong you are with math.
For his internship interviews, he was asked about the math minor - potential employers may actually look upon it favorably.
