Actually, my far away college kid never came home for Thanksgiving…or for the week long spring break. It was costly to fly her home. For Thanksgiving she went to relatives who lived near her college. For the spring break, she did something through her college. They had service things that took the week. She did those.
BUT the long winter vacations….both of our kids came home. Both stayed at their colleges until the dorms closed because both had jobs they worked. Then they came home where we celebrated the holidays as a family, they visited friends here, and sometimes we drove to see the grandparents.
S’s was COVID year but he visited gf’s home, came home, vacationed with gf, and spent the rest of the time at his apartment at school. He never came home for Thanksgiving except Freshman year. Usually would be combination of seeing gf’s family, home for Christmas, vacation with us or gf, a little internship/shadowing, some time with friends at school. This year will be come home, go back to campus to attend weddings, come back here with gf to leave for Cancun, come back here and drive back to campus for rest of vacation. Campus is 11 hours away! Last vacation I think he drove it 3 times. This year I think it will be only twice there and back!
This year DD is staying in her off-campus apartment a good bit of it, hoping to get some hours at her 3 jobs. She is just under 2 hours away. She will hopefully be able to be home Christmas weekend, see her boyfriend (same hometown as us), and is taking a road trip over New Year’s. So, from your list, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and probably 8 lol.
He is paying for most of them! We give him money for Christmas instead of gifts that helps with airfare or food. This trip he and his gf paid for entirely. He took his CARES money and other savings and invested it and has done quite well! He has a monthly budget we give him while in school/vet school - not a lot but enough for the rent and some food. He works some and saves his summer job money. He is great at finding deals! We are paying for his trip to Belgium this summer but that is a mini faculty lead travel abroad for school. He will pay for any extra days, alcohol, shopping, etc.
